Utah 5: Capitol Reef National Park

Capitol Reef on näistä Utah:n puistoista se pienin ja ehkä vähän turhaankin aliarvostetuin. Joissain reittisuosituksissa sanottiin, että puistoon riittää puoli päivää hyvin, joissain kehotettiin lähinnä ajamaan vain puiston läpi. Capitol Reefhän ei itse asiassa ole ihan pieni sekään, mutta puiston läpi menee valtatie ja siitä erkanee yksi maisematie. Nämä kuitenkin kattavat vain pienen osan puistosta ja muuten siellä kyllä on päällystämätöntä tietä ja telttailuvaihtoehtoja kauempanakin. Meidän reissu kun oli tällainen puisto/päivä, niin ei lähdetty mihinkään takamettiin, vaan pitäydyttiin pääsääntöisesti näillä päällystetyillä teillä.

Me siis tosiaan siirryttiin edellisestä puistosta toisen lähelle aina iltaisin, jotta aamulla pääsee aikaisin suunnistamaan uuteen puistoon ja iltapäivällä, kun on mahdollisesti kuuma, voi istua ilmastoidussa autossa kohti seuraavaa paikkaa. Archesista hotelliin matkatessa ajelimme tosiaan tuon puiston läpi kulkevan tien ja jossain vähän pysähtelimme katsomassa nähtävyyksiäkin. Koska Torrey tosiaan on noin 200 asukkaan kylä ja noin 15 km:n päästä puistosta, päätimme sitten vielä pimeän tultua ajaa puistoon ihastelemaan tähtitaivasta. Paikalla oli pari muutakin perhettä, osa varustautunut vähän ammattimaisemmilla välineillä. Meidän kameralla kuvien ottamisesta ei tullut mitään, mutta tuolla keskellä ei mitään, kun ei kauheasti ole mitään keinovalosaastetta ja ollaan noin 2 kilometrin korkeudessa, niin hienosti näkyy, kunhan silmät tottuu. En ole tainnut nähdä linnunrataa koskaan omilla silmin sellaisena kauniina tähtirykelmäviivana. Mitään en tähdistä ymmärrä, mutta sen kyllä ymmärsin, että tämä on kyllä tällainen kerran elämässä -kokemus. Tuota puistoa muuten pidetään yhtenä maan parhaana kansallispuistona juuri tähtitaivaan katseluun, eikä kyllä ihme.

So we continued our travels towards Capitol Reef National Park. I guess it is the smallest of the Utah National Parks and probably the most underrated. I saw some travel tip pages saying that half a day is totally enough or just to drive through is ok, too. I do not think so. Even the highway goes through the park, so you can actually just drive through, I think that you should spend a little more time than that. The paved roads actually cover a very small part of the park. We did not go to the unpaved roads or back country hiking, but I bet they would be just awesome. Since we had a one day per park this time, we stayed on the road. 

We drove from park to the hotel next to the park always in the afternoon/evening, so that we could start exploring a new park right after we woke up the next morning. This way we could still hike in the cooler mornings and stay in the car with the AC in the afternoon/evenings. Since Torrey (where we stayed) has appr. a population of 200 people, just a couple of lodges/hotels and restaurants/sandwich places and because of its proximity to the park (appr. 11 miles), we decided to drive from Torrey back to the park after dark. I read somewhere that from all the national parks in the country, this is probably the best for night sky viewing. I do not know anything about astronomy or stars, but since the air is very clean at appr. 7000 feet, since it is in middle of nowhere and the sky was clear, it was really a once in a lifetime (unless you come back again) experience. I have never seen the Milky Way that clearly really making a line line bunch of stars formation. Our camera could not capture it, but I am sure there are great pictures online. There were only 2 other families doing the same, one with very professional looking gear with them. I highly recommend doing this, if you are ever in the area.

Koko ajan pitäisi olla räiskimässä kameran kanssa, mutta ei vaan ehdi. / The first pictures are taken from the car when we drove through it in the evening. It is really a very interesting place, every couple of minutes the scenery looks a bit different.

Ja kun nyt on kerran petroglyfejä kuvattu muuallakin, niin olihan täälläkin sitten omansa. Ihan lähelle en päässyt, sillä alakuvaa katsoessa näkee, että mistä kuvat voi ottaa ja missä kohtaa on tuo sileän kallioseinän alku, jossa nuo ihmishahmot alareunassa ovat. Kukakohan sinne on aikoinaan keksinyt kiivetä välittämään viestin satojen vuosien päähän? / Since I have pictures of petroglyphs from the other places too, here are the ones from this park. If you look at the picture below you can see the whole rock, the picture above is taken with a zoom from the bottom of the huge rock, where you are not allowed to climb.

Tämän kivimuodostelman nimi on The Castle, eli linna. Melko vähäistä mielikuvitusta tosiaan vaatii ymmärtää, että mistä nimi on tullut. / This rock is called The Caste, because it just looks like a castle. What else could I say about this really.

Kuten sanottu, päätä kun vähän kääntää, niin aina on erilaista luonnonkivimuodostelmaa nenän edessä. Näillä kaikilla on toki omat nimityksensäkin, yhdeltä sivulta löysin erilaisten muodostelmien selitykset englanniksi. / Everywhere you turn your head there is a different formation. I wonder how these have survided during the times. You can find names to different rock formations from this www site that I found.

Siinä ihan edellisen paikan vieressä on Goosenecks Overlook, josta näkee tämän kanjonin ja sen mutkia. Kuvat eivät todellakaan tee oikeutta paikalle. / Next to the Panorama Point is Goosenecks Overlook, where you can see the canyon. The picture really can't show all the depth and beauty in it.

Näistä kuvista oikeastaan vasta alkaa meidän päivämme puistossa eli torstaiaamun patikkaretki kulki täällä kallioiden välissä Capitol Gorge Trail -polkua pitkin. Gorgehan siis tarkoittaa laajaa kanjonia tai solaa ja jos tuota yhtä kuvaa katsoo, jossa näkyy meidän selät, niin saa ehkä vähän käsitystä siitä minkäkoisten rinteiden vieressä välillä suhteellisen kapeaakin polkua käveltiin. / This is actually where the pictures from our day at the park begin. The previous ones were from the previous evening. So on Thurday morning we headed to Capitol Gorge Trail. It really is a great trail between those massive rocks. You can just walk along the trail (and then come back) and there is practically no elevation difference. Nice to go just regular walking for a chance. One of pictures show our backs just so you could imagine the size of these rocks. They are huge.

Tältä reitiltä voi lähteä kiipeämään näitä kallioita ja kiviä ylös, jos haluaa käydä katsomassa luonnon muovaamia vesialtaita. Ainoa ongelma on, että missään ei ole järkevää kuvaa tai karttaa, miten sinne päästään ja reittiä merkkaavat vain tällaiset kiviröykkiöt. Aikamme toisten jalanjälkiä seurattuamme ja niiden perässä harhaan mentyämme päätimme luovuttaa, emmekä siis koskaan löytäneet niitä vesialtaita. Parempaa onnea muille retkeilijöille. Ainoa reiät kalliossa, joita nähtiin oli vain vaakasuorassa seinässä, eikä siinä maassa. / You can go and climb up the rocks to The Tanks (water holes). The only problem is that there is no good map there and not a real trail either. These rock piles mark the route and then you can alwasy follow the footprint of others. Apparently some of the foot prints very leading to a wrong direction, and I guess some of the rock piles too. That resulted that we did not find the water tanks and since it was starting to be really hot and we did not fancy getting lost we quit searching. So we only saw the wholes on the walls. No water. Better luck next time.

Jännintä tässä alueessa on, että aikoinaan mormoniuudisasukkaita päätti muuttaa tänne keskelle kivikkoa joskus 1800-luvun lopulla. Sen seurauksena täällä on vielä joitain pieniä taloja (joista yhdessä on pieni museohuone) ja työkaluja ja upeat hedelmätarhat. Huhtikuussa kun täällä oltiin, alkoivat puut vasta vihertää ja joissain oli jo kukkiakin, mutta kesällä ja syksyllä tämä on kuulemma tosi upea paikka. Ja silloin hedelmiä saa poimia niin paljon kuin haluaa sellaiseen normi suomalaiseen mansikkamaa tyyliin, eli suoraan puusta ilmaiseksi ja pussiin tai muualle jos keräät, niin sitten otetaan pieni maksu. Täältä löytyy siis ainakin kirsikka-, persikka-, omena-, päärynä- ja aprikoosipuita, ehkä jotain muitakin. / One interesting thing about this part is the Fruita area where mormon settles settled in the late 1900th century. I wonder how they ended up here in the middle of large rocks, but since they came here back then, you can still find some houses, one has a tiny museum room in it, the fruit gardens and some machinery here. We were here in April, when it was just mildly green and blooming, but in the summer and fall you can actually pick the apples, apricots, cherries, peaches and pears and eat them. Or pay some to take with you. I hear that they taste really good.

Päätettiin sitten käydä tarpomassa vielä vähän yhtä polkua ylöspäin. Mitäs muutakaan sitä tekisi lämpimänä aurinkoisena päivänä noin kahden kilometrin korkeudessa kuin kiipeäisi vuorenrinnettä ylöspäin menevää polkua? Suunnilleen siitä niiden petrogryfien paikkeilta lähtee toiselle puolelle tietä Cohab Canyon Trail. Toi reitti on sinänsä vähän hassu, että se menee siitä tieltä sinne Fruitaan ja takaisin pitää tulla joko samaa reittiä tai kiertää ajotietä vähän pidempikin lenkki. Ei viitsitty kokeilla ja arvuutella, että kuinka paljon kokonaisuudessaan pitäisi kävellä, joten kävelimme suunnilleen puoleen väliin, josta näkee sen kanjonin. / So what is a park visit without one hiking up the trail at 6000 feet hike? We decided to go to the Cohab Canyon Trail that starts right next to the road and ends to Fruita. Since you have to either come back the same route or as I understood along the road a bigger loop we hiked until probably the mid of the trail where you can see the canyon and then came back.

Siinä matkan varrella oli tällainen kivi, jossa värit aaltoili pitkin kiveä. Koska mun mielestä tämä oli niin upea, niin napsin kuvia sitten vähän useammankin. Niinkun näkyy. / The rock colors and formations are just great here. I really liked this one and took a lot of pics. As you can see..

Eli seuraavaksi matka kohti ruokaa, auton tankkausta ja kohti Zionia. Bryce Canyon olisi noin niinkun reitillisesti lähempänä tätä puistoa, mutta koska Zion on näistä puistoista kaikkein isoin ja melko lähellä Bryceä ja Brycestä taas on lyhyempi matka jatkaa kohti Salt Lake Cityä, olimme tehneet päätöksen yöpyä seuraavaksi Zionin viereisessä Springdalessa. Mutta siitä ja Zionista sitten seuraavassa postauksessa.

Next it was time for some food, gas for the car and drive to Zion. If you look at the map Bryce Canyon is closer to Capitol Reef and would be the natural next stop. But since Zion is the biggest park and needed more time and Bryce was actually closer on the way back to Salt Lake City, we had decided to go to Springdale next and be prepared for Zion. And I will write about them more in the next posting.
