Illalla suunnattiin siis aivan siihen Bryce Canyonin ulkopuolelle olevaan hotelliin Ruby´s Inniin. Jo silloin vähän sateli ja ajattelimme, että ilta menee sitten lepäillessä, pikaisesti haettiin portilta kartta seuraavan päivän suunnittelua varten. Ostimme siis täksi vuodeksi kansallispuistojen vuosikortin, jolla pääsee kaikkiin puistoihin vain tuolla vuosimaksulla. Tosin normaalistikin pääsymaksu kattaa yleensä 7 päivän vierailun puistossa, joten silloinkin voi käydä jo pikaisesti siellä edellisenä päivänä. Meillä oli reissun aikana tullut tavaksi katsella karttaa joko padilta tai sitten ihan fyysisesti jo käteen saatua karttaa edellisenä iltana ja suunnitella reittiä. Alueella on pari muutakin majoituspaikkaa, mutta Ruby´s Inn on ollut tässä jo 100 vuotta. Tai ei varmaankaan tämä nykyinen rakennus, mutta samalla nimellä on perustajat aikoinaan tarjonneet käsittääkseni niin mökki- kuin telttamajoitusta tontillaan. Samassa rakennuksessa on nykyään niin kauppa, hotelli kuin diner-tyyppinen ravintolakin, joten ulos ei olisi tarvinnut mennä kastumaan. Koska näytti siltä, että aikaa meillä olisi ja ilma oli vähän surkean oloinen, niin kävimme syömässä ja sen jälkeen paikan valokuvaliikkeessä ottamassa itsestämme villin lännen potretit rekvisiittoineen. Oli ihan hauskaa, vaikka kuvattavat olisivatkin voineet näyttää vähän pirteämmiltä. Ravintola oli ihan ok, ei nyt mikään gourmet-ravintola, mutta siellä oli niin listat kuin noutopöytäkin. Naapurin pöydässä oleville ranskalaisille paikka ei ilmeisesti kelvannut, sillä he totesivat tarjoilijalle, etteivät löydä listalta mitään kivaa ja että he eivät syökään paikassa. Olivat kuitenkin ehtineet tilata ruokajuomat, jotka sisälsi myös alkoholillisia vaihtoehtoja. Siinäpä tulikin sitten pieni ongelma. Utahissa ei nimittäin saa tarjoilla alkoholia ilman ruokaa (vähän niinkuin Suomessa vielä 60-luvulla), joten heidän oli pakko tilata jonkunlaiset alkupalat, jotta saivat juoda ne oluensa, jotka heille oli jo tarjoiltu.
Palatakseni tämän postauksen alkuun. Meillä ei nyt siis oikein käynyt kelien kanssa tuuri. Seuraavanakin aamuna satoi ja alue oli paksun sumun peitossa. Menimme puistoon ja katsoimme siellä infokeskuksessa jonkun lyhyen dokumenttielokuvankin, mutta keli ulkona tuntui vain huononevan. Puiston rangerit eivät osanneet yhtään arvioida, että selkiytyisikö keli yhtään, koko päivälle oli luvattu sumua ja vielä oli sen verran alkukevät ja viileä, että ennuste todennäköisesti piti paikkansa. Päätettiin käydä kuitenkin kurkkaamassa, että näkyisikö siellä puistossa mitään. No ei kauheasti näkynyt. Siihen kun yhdistetään se, että puiston läpi kulkeva tie on n. 2,2-2,4:n kilometrin korkeudella ja kun yö oli yövytty samoissa korkeuksissa, alkoi itsellä tuntua, että olo on vähän hutera ja nenästäkin alkoi vuotaa verta. Siinä vaiheessa sitten luovutimme ja lähdimme ajamaan puistosta pois. Jonkun hetken ajeltuamme alkoi taivas kirkastua ja tien reunoilla olevat oranssinpunaiset kalliomuodostelmat lähes hehkuivat. Päätettiin itse asiassa kääntyä takaisin ja suunnata jälleen kohti Brycea, mutta mitä lähemmäksi sitä päästiin, sitä sakeampi sumu oli, joten ei kun takaisin tien päälle ja nokka kohti Salt Lake Citya. Bryce jää nyt myös sitten johonkin toiseen kertaan. Las Vegasiin on täältä meiltä helppo lentää ja Bryce on noin neljän tunnin ajomatkan päässä sieltä, joten ei ihan mahdoton ajatus. Ehkä kuitenkin yöni vietän jossain vähän alhaisemmassa ilmanalassa kuin melkein 2,5 kilometrissä.
Oh Bryce, Bryce, Bryce... Many people say that Bryce Canyon is their favorite park from all the five Utah parks. If you click the link you can see why. I do not have any great pictures unfortunately to share, since the weather in Bryce was not favorable to our sightseeing or hiking.
We drove to Ruby´s Inn hotel just outside Bryce Canyon after the visit in Zion. The weather was not any better than when we left Zion. So we figured we would have time to eat and do other stuff. Ruby´s Inn is the oldest hotel at the area (or I guess not necessarily this building, but the family that owned this piece of land 100 years ago, already had some lodging here). It also has a pool, restaurant and stores, so you do not have to go outside. We decided to go to the photo shop, where they take Old Western pictures with all the prop and clothing. We had a bunch of fun even though we could have looked a bit more cheery. I guess we were all pretty tired from all the traveling. We also went to get something to eat. The restaurant is a diner type restaurant with also a buffet option. It was ok, but I have seen better. There are not a lot of options though in this tiny place outside of Bryce Canyon and we were hungry. There was this French family next to our table and they decided not to eat at the place, nothing felt good enough. But they had already ordered drinks, beer and wine and stuff. And you know, you can´t order alcohol without food in Utah. So they had to eat their appetizers anyway to finish their drinks. Yeah, Utah is pretty different than California is.
Anyways the next morning we headed to the rainy, foggy Bryce Canyon. It was almost clear from the morning that we would not be seeing the canyon during this trip. The weather forecast said foggy for the whole day and the rangers would not give any estimate (totally understandable) how it would go. So we watched this presentation movie about Bryce at the visitor center and then headed to the canyon. Well, there was really nothing to see with that weather. And when the road hit 9000 feet elevation I did not feel very well anymore. With my nose bleeding and stuff, we decided to turn around and leave the park. After a couple of miles the weather cleared and we could see the beautiful orange red rocks. We actually turned back and headed back to Bryce. But it was the same fog there still. So we just decided to drive to Salt Lake City instead. Maybe we will come back here again, but not during spring, when there is a bigger chance of bad weather. We´ll see.

| Ja seuraavat kuvat ovat sitten todennäköisesti Sunset Point -nimisestä kohdasta Bryce Canyonilla. Sinänsä puistossa on neljä erilaista näköalapaikkaa, joista näkyy hieman erilaiset amfiteatterimaiset kivimuodostelmat. Niiden lisäksi puistossa menee kuulemma todella kiva vaellusreitti tuolla kivikon pohjalla. / These pics are probably from Sunset Point. I really can´t tell anymore. There are 4 points that you want to visit here, Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Inspiration Point ja Bryce Point, with all a bit different amphitheatre like views. Apparently there is a nice trail too that goes in the bottom of the odd shaped pillars called hoodoos. |

Olimme alkunperin ajatelleet yöpyä puolimatkassa Brycen ja Salt Lake Cityn välillä, mutta kun Zionissa sääennusteita katsoessa näytti sateiselta muutettiin suunnitelmaa ja vaihdettiin yöpyminen Farifield Inn and Suitesiin lähellä Salt Lake Cityn keskustaa. Sinänsä oli varmaan ihan hyvä vaihdos, sillä Salt Lake Cityssä paistoi aurinko ja päästiin sitten viettämään ennen myöhään illalla kotiin lähtevää konetta vielä sunnuntaipäivä kaupungissa ja vähän muuallakin.
The original plan was to stay in a motel somewhere between Bryce Canyon and Salt Lake City. A couple of days before it looked like it would be raining at Zion and Bryce (as it really did too) and we changed to booking to a hotel in Salt Lake City. That turned out to be a good move and we had time to spend the Sunday in Salt Lake City and enjoy the city and the surroundings before heading home late in the evening.
