Papereita ja kiinteistövälittäjiä / Papers and real estate agents

Pitäisi vihdoin alkaa keskittyä joulurauhoittumiseen, mutta hoidettavia hommia näköjään piisaa. Puoliso haki tänään pankista todistuksen siitä, paljonko tileillämme on ollut rahaa viimeisen 6 kk:n aikana. Kun kerran on todennäköistä, ettei hänellä ole tarjousta työpaikasta haastatteluun mennessä, niin meidän käsityksemme mukaan on haastattelussa todistettava, että pystymme silti elättämään itsemme muuton jälkeen.
Olemme myös keskustelleet edes takaisin asioista, että millä kriteereillä muutto tapahtuisi ja missä järjestyksessä hommat hoituvat. Tällä hetkellä koko perhe (myös se posi-negatiivisesti muuttoon suhtautunut lapsukainen) on sitä mieltä, että Suomeen jääminen ei tässä vaiheessa ole vaihtoehto. Jos ja toivottavasti kun haastattelun jälkeen lopputulos on se, että viisumi lätkäistään passiin, on vaihtoehtoja kolme:

• Puoliso saa työtarjouksen, ottaa sen vastaan, irtisanoutuu ja muutetaan joko puoliso ensin tai kaikki kerralla
• Myydään asunto ja vain lähdetään - työpaikan ja asunnon etsiminen sitten paikan päällä
• Puoliso ottaa jossain vaiheessa alkukevättä kesälomansa ja lähtee etsimään töitä paikan päältä ja töiden löydyttyä sitten aloitetaan muuttorumba

Tällä hetkellä ei siis muita vaihtoehtoja, koska ne tarkoittaisivat Suomeen jäämistä ja tämän mahdollisuuden käyttämättä jättämistä. (Suomea vastaan meillä ei ole mitään, mutta tänne pääsee aina takaisin.)
Tähän liittyen sitten tapasimme kolme kiinteistövälittäjää, jotka kävivät arvioimassa asuntomme. Jos haastettelu menee nappiin, yhdelle näistä lähtee puhelu heti haastattelun jälkeen. On muuten turkasen vaikea päättää, millä kriteereillä välittäjän valitsee, mutta tämä päätös tehtiin lopulta fiiliksellä ja on toivottavasti oikea päätös.

We should concentrate on Christmas, but there are still some things to do. My husband went to pick up a paper from the bank that stated, how much money we have had in our bank accounts the last 6 month. It seems now that he will not have a job offer before the interview (it is not easy to find a job from the USA when you are in Europe and not having a work permit yet..). So, we have the impression that we have to proof that we have some assets when we immigrate, so we will not be using the US social security.
We have also had long talks how and what we are going to do, if we will get the visa. At this point the whole family (including the son that had posi-negative feelings about moving before) is anxiously waiting for moving. Staying here is not an option at this point. If and hopefully when we do get the visa in our passports after the interview, we have now three options:

• Hubby gets a job offer, takes it, quits his job here and then we move (husband first and us later or all at the same time)
• We sell our home and just move - you can find the job and apartment later
• Hubby takes his summer vacations in the spring and goes job hunting to Bay area and after succeeding (no other options here..) we'll start the moving process

No other options at this point, because they would mean that we would have to stay here and not immigrate. We love Finland and staying here is not bad, it would just mean that we could not use this amazing option to experience something different.
So we met three real estate agents and they did an evaluation of our home. If the interview is succesfull the real estate agent that we selected is going to be the first person we will call. Oh boy, it is hard to pick one and the best agent, but this decicion was made purely with the feeling we got from the agents. This one just felt better than the other ones, I hope it will be the right decision.

Lääkärintarkastus käyty / After medical examination

Lääkärintarkastuksessa on siis käyty ja ilmeisesti läpäisty. Ainakin lääkäri kirjoitteli lappuihin kaikenlaista peruslääkärintarkastuksen jälkeen (sydän, keuhkot, verenpaine jne.) ja lupasi tehdä paperit valmiiksi ensi viikolla ja laittaa ne sinetöityyn kuoreen, jonka voimme sitten käydä hakemassa ennen kuin menemme suurlähetystöön haastatteluun. Kuulemma ennen 9/11:tä papereita oli vähemmän, nyt lääkäri siis täytti meistä kaikista 7 sivua paperia, liitti passikuvia papereihin, tarkasti saadut rokotukset ja teki meille aikuisille lähetteet labraan. Labrassa kävimme keuhkoröntgenissä ja verikokeessa. Ihan selväksi ei käynyt, että mitä ne kaksi verikoetestiä olivat, mutta toisella ilmeisesti tarkastetaan sairastaako kuppaa. Eli ilmeisesti näillä kokeilla kartoitetaan tarttuvien kulkutautien olemassaolo. Olen kyllä suuresti hämmästynyt, jos lääkäristä tulee soitto ja meillä kerrotaan olevan joku tällainen tauti. Eli eiköhän tämä osuus ole läpäisty.
Nyt onkin aika keskittyä jouluvalmisteluihin ja joulunviettoon ja yrittää olla jänskäämättä liikaa, alle kuukausi haastatteluun.

Medical examination done and probably also passed. The doctor did a medical examination (blood pressure, lungs, heart etc.) and wrote something to a buch of papers. He promised to get the papers done next week and we can get them before we go to the interview in a sealed envelope. The doctor told us that before 9/11 there were less papers to fill, now he filled 7 papers from all of us, attached our pictures to the papers and ordered some laboratory tests. At the laboratory we (adults) had a thorax X-ray taken and two blood tests. The thorax X-ray is for tuberculosis, but I am not quite sure about the blood tests, if I heard correctly, the other one is for syphilis. Probably they are all test for infectious diceases. I would be very surprised, if we had any of these, so I guess the doctor's examination is passed.
Now, it is time for Christmas preparation and time to thing something else than this moving process (it is hard though). Less than a month to the interview.

Edistystä / Progress

No nyt on hankittu rikosrekisteriote (tai oikeastaan ennemminkin tieto siitä, ettei ole rikosrekisteriä) Oikeusturvakeskukselta. Virkatodistukset yritettiin käydä eilen hakemassa maistraatissa, mutta niiden järjestelmät oli alhaalla, joten lupasivat postittaa ne meille. Listassa lukee, että pitää olla birth certificate ja marriage certificate. Suomessa kun ei ole mitään syntymätodistuksia ja kaikki tarvittavat tiedot pitäisi olla virkatodistuksessa. Oikein väännettiin ja käännettiin asiaa maistraatin tädin kanssa. Ilmeisesti nyt tekee meille kaikille virkatodistuksen ja sitten vielä erikseen tuon avioliittotodistuksen, vaikka tieto ilmeisesti löytyykin virkatodistuksesta. Puoliso oli tilannut englanninkielisen otteen sotilaspalvelustaan ja senkin pitäisi tulla pikapuoliin postitse. Alkaa kohta paperit olla kasassa.
Varasin myös vihdoin ajan MPR-rokotukselle. On ilmeisen kiirusta tuolla terveyskeskuksen rokotusjonossa ja kuulemma väkeä pois, mutta kahden viikon päästä pitäisi sekin käydä ottamassa. Lääkärintarkastuskin varattiin joulukuun puolivälin paikkeille Eiran lääkäriasemalle. Eli Helsinkiin käy tie, kun nämä USA:n viisumilääkärit löytyvät vain sieltä.
On yritetty edelleen katsella, mistä tavarasta voisi hankkiutua eroon. Samaten olemme jo yrittäneet selvitellä, että mitä maksaa tavaroiden muutto USA:han vs. säilyttäminen varastossa Suomessa. Näyttää siltä, että on melkein saman hintaista muuttaa vain vähän tavaraa kuin koko kontillinen, vaikkakin törkeän kallista molemmat. Myös tavaroiden säilyttäminen on suhteellisen hintavaa. Mutta nämä ratkaistaan sitten, kun (ja jos) lupa Green Cardiin tulee ja puoliso löytää työpaikan ja muutto oikeasti tapahtuu. Jotenkin sitä vaan haluaisi saada jotkut asiat jo selviksi, mutta ehkäpä sitten tammikuussa asiat selkeytyvät.

Thing are progressing, we received our criminal records (or actually a statement that our records are empty = there is no criminal record). We also went to get our birth and marriage certificates, but the system was not working :-O, they promised to send them to us soon. My husband also called and asked for the Military records (attending military is a civil duty for men here at the age of 18-). They should arrive soon.
I also have now an appointment for my vaccination. They were very busy at the health center, but I am going there in two weeks. We also have our Visa medical examination in Helsinki in December. There are only two doctors in Finland, both in Helsinki, that can do this medical examination.
We have also tried to find out the costs of moving our stuff to USA / storaging them in Finland. It seems that moving just a little stuff and moving a lot of stuff is practically the same price and storaging part of it here is also expensive. Well, we have to decide what to do later, when (if) we get the Green Card and my husband finds a job..

Odottelua / Waiting

"Lottovoitosta" on kulunut nyt kolme kuukautta. Odottelu ei ole meikäläisen parhaita puolia. Netissä surffaamalla on selvinnyt joitain asioita, mutta meidän tilanne ei ole edennyt vielä mihinkään - eikä siis olisi pitänytkään. Tässä etsiessä on sentään löydetty sivusto, josta voi seurata näiden visa-hakemusten tilannetta. Joulukuussa käsittelevät hakemuksia, joiden numero on 13 500 tai alle. Meillä siis parisen tuhatta sen yli. Riippuen nyt ihmisten halukkuudesta hakea ja lähettää papereitaan, meidän vuoromme voisi olla tammi-maaliskuussa viime vuosien tilastojen perusteella. Vielä on siis aikaa, eikä tarvitse vielä odotella viestiä, joka kertoisi meidän haastatteluaikamme suurlähetystössä. Haastetteluajan saamisen jälkeen onkin asioita hoidettavana, lääkärintarkistus hoidettavana ja papereita, joita pitää etsiä. Vielä niitä ei voi tehdä, sillä osan papereita täytyy olla alle 3 kk vanhoja.

Poliorokotteen olen jo käynyt hakemassa, edellisestä olikin yli 20 vuotta aikaa. Joku muu rokote pitää vielä hakea. Muu perhe onkin ilmeisesti riittävän hyvin rokotettu. Hieman ristiriitaista tietoa siitäkin on kyllä saatu.
Olen myös alkanut selailla kaappeja ja myydä kirpparilla ja netissä tavaraa, jota ei enää oikeasti tarvita ja laittaa säästettäviä / aarteita omiin laatikoihinsa. Tässä vaiheessa siis vain sellaista tavaraa, josta voisi luopua muutenkin, kun kerran ei ole vielä varmaa, että onko muutto edessä vaiko eikö.
Ei tässä muutakaan voi, kun jatkaa odottelua.

It has been 3 months since the DV lottery win. Our situation is still the same. We are still waiting. Not patiently though, because I kind of generally hate waiting. We have found more info of the process from the Internet. We found a visa bulletin that lists which lottery number is current at which time. In December the number is 13 500. So it is not our turn yet. Maybe in January - March, if it goes like the couple of last years and there is not a big rush in the next few months. So we a not going to receive the information from our interview at the embassy yet. When the interview time is given, there are a lot of things to do, medical examination and papers to get. Some of the papers have to be less than 3 months old, so we cannot get them yet when we do not yet know the schedule.
I did get my polio vaccination already (the last time I had that was some 20 years ago..). There is still at least one vaccination that I have to get before the interview. The rest of the family should have all the vaccinations that they need already.
I have also begun to go through our stuff. I have sold some of it at the flea market or in the Internet. Just something that is extra stuff and we would not be needing them anyway. Even though we would not move.
Well, at this point, we just need to continue waiting.

Salaisuus / We have a secret

15.7. illalla puolison kanssa tarkistimme Green Card -arpajaisen tuloksia arpajaisten sivuilta. Ensin katsoimme minun arpani - ei voittoa. Sen jälkeen puolison tilanteen. Sivulle lävähti heti erilainen teksti, vahvistunumeroita, ohjeita jne. Ensimmäisen vilkauksen jälkeen vedin henkeä, katsoin puolisoa ja molemmat taisi päästää suustaan jotain "ei he*****i"-tyylistä. Tämä taisi olla viides kerta, kun arpajaisiin osallistuttiin ja olimme sopineet, että tämä on myös viimeinen kerta. Puoliso on työskennellyt kansainvälisessä ympäristössä IT-alalla ja on hinkunut takaisin USA:han töihin ja erilaisiin työtehtäviin, ei vaan ole tärpännyt. Paitsi 15.7.2011. Silloin tuli voitto, joka oikeuttaa käynnistämään Green Card - eli USA:n oleskelulupaprosessin.

Kaksi yötä taisi mennä melko vähillä unilla ja hirveä häslinki täyttää vaadittavat paperit, etsiä tarvittavat tiedot ja lähettää ne etukäteen. Prosessi ei ollut meille tuttu, joten ajattelimme, että paperit on saatava lähtemään mahdollisimman pian, jotta saadaan ne pikaisesti käsittelyyn. Nettisurffausten jälkeen tosin meille on käynyt ilmi, että paperien perilletuloajalla ei ole asian kanssa merkitystä, vaan ratkaisevampaa on tuo saatu arpanumero. Puolisolla se on Eurooppaan tulleista numeroista nro 15***, joten ihan ensimmäisten joukossa emme pääse prosessissa eteenpäin. Arpanumeron pitäisi olla kuitenkin sen verran alhainen, että pääsemme prosessissa oikeasti eteenpäin, mutta milloin, se on vielä avoinna. Myönnettäviä oleskelulupia on 50 000, mutta arpajaisissa luvan prosessin aloittamiseen saa n. 100 000. Mikään siis ei ole vielä varmaan mihinkään suuntaan.
Siksi asiassa on pidetty vielä matalaa profiilia ja vain kourallinen ystävistämme / sukulaisista tietää vielä tästä asiasta. Ja on kyllä hemmetin vaikea pitää tällaista salaisuutta.

It was on 15th of July and the Diversity Visa Lottery Results 2012 had been released to the DV-system. We, that is me and my husband, thought that let's check these now right away. This was not our first time that we had entered our submissions to the lottery (actually this was the 5th time), but this would be the last time. That is at least what we had agreed on. First we checked my submission status - not selected. Then we looked my husband's status and right away we both saw that the page looked totally different than mine. Confirmation number, instructions etc. I gasped, looked at my husband and we both said something that I cannot write here (a four-letter word, starts with H). My husband has previously worked as an expat in USA. He works in the IT industry, so he has been wanting to go back and start in a different type of a company. That is why we have entered our submissions to the lottery, but have not won. At least until this year we hadn't. And now he has the opportunity to start the Green Card process.
The next two nights I guess I slept appr. 2-3 hours / night. It was just so much to think about. And there were lots of paperwork and we wanted to hurry with those. We only found out later, that it's not the papers and when they receive them, but the lottery number that is going to guide our future. There are 50 000 lucky ones that will get the Green Card in the end, but appr. 100 000 has been selected in the lottery. Our number is  15 *** in Europe category, so we are not the first ones to proceed in this process. So, it is not sure how is this process going to end.
So that is why we have told only a few people about the win. And it is hard to keep this kind of a secret.
