Salt Lake City & Antelope Island State Park

Utah'n kansallispuistojen jälkeen siis tosiaan ajoimme Salt Lake Cityyn, josta meillä oli sunnuntai-iltana lento kotiin. Joskus tulee luettua jotain matkailuoppaita, mutta harvemmin. Olen itse asiassa viime aikoina käyttänyt TripAdvisorin (ei ole maksettu mainos) appia, johon aina merkkailen kiinnostavia paikkoja, joissa voisi reissatessa käydä. Sieltä löytyi sitten sellainen paikka kuin Antelope Island State Park, joka on Salt Lake Cityn lähellä olevan Ison Suolajärven (Great Salt Lake) kaakkoisosassa. Paikkahan ei sinänsä ainakin kartan mukaan ole koko vuotta saari, vaan vedenpinnan ollessa alhaalla se on niemimaa, mutta sinne ajetaan kyllä sieltä järven puolelta sellaista pitkää maasiltaa/pengertietä myöten. Olin lukenut kommentteja alueesta ja niissä varoiteltiin poistumasta autosta sitä tietä ajellessa ennen kuin pääsee itse saarelle. Ja ne kommentit todellakin pitivät paikkansa. Koko matkan ajan näkyi sellaisia järjettömän kokoisia mustia hyttyspilviä. Jos hetkeksikin pysähtyi autolla, niin jo oli auto hyttysparvien ympäröimä. Ei onneksi avattu ikkunaa tyyliin "tästä saisi hyvän kuvan". Jotkut kyllä näyttivät pyöräilevän tuonne puistoon, joten en tiedä ovatko sitten tottuneet vai jollain erityissupermyrkyillä varustettuja.

Paikka ei ole kauhean suuri, siellä menee niin ajoteitä kuin kävelyyn/vaellukseen tarkoitettujakin polkuja. Salt lake Cityhän on enemmän tai vähemmän vuorten ympäröimä, joten maisemat ainakin oli kohdallaan. Puistossahan on siis myös biisoneita, itse asiassa yksi maan isoimmista vapaana liikkuvista biisonilaumoista, ja nimensä mukaisesti antilooppeja. Tarkemmin ottaen hanka-antilooppeja. (Ja paljastan nyt tyhmyyteni, mutta en tätä ennen tiennyt, että tällä mantereella ylipäätään on mitään antilooppeja.) Meillä oli oikein onnistunut visiitti ko. saarelle.

After the National Parks, we had still a day to spend in Salt Lake City before our flight took off late evening. I sometimes read travel books, but this time I did not have time to browse any. But I have developed a habit of using TripAdvisor (not a paid commercial, I just like it) when planning our travels. I browse the places and save them and then we visit some of the, some not. Here we had saved the info of the Antelope Island State Park, which really was a nice place to visit. The park is in the Great Salt Lake not too far from the Salt Lake City. It is an island, but if I understood correctly sometimes when the water level is low, it is actually a Peninsula. There is a 7 mile causeway that you have to drive to get to the park, and the fee was $10 per car. I had already read reviews that there is a ton of mosquitoes along the causeway, and oh boy those reviews were not wrong. There were not just mosquitoes, but mosquito clouds. If you stopped the car you were instantly surrounded by a black cloud of them. Luckily we were prepared and I did not roll the car window down to just "take a nice picture". The windows were closed and stayed closed while on the causeway. I do not know how the bikes survived the mosquitoes, or were they just used to them already. 

The island is really nice, there is a road to drive and some smaller hiking trails. Since Salt Lake City is practically surrounded by the mountains and the lake is so serene, the scenery is really awesome. There are also bisons and antelopes in the island. The bison herd is one of the biggest free herd (not belonging to anyone) in the country, and to be honest, I did not even know that there were native antelopes in this country. Well, there are, and they are called pronghorn antelopes, and their horns look quirky.

Ja sitten on vähän kuvia maisemista ja biisoneista. Nämä biisonit ovat vähän epäkiitollisia kuvattavia, kun ne tuntuvat syövän koko ajan. Jostain luin, että ne syövät päivässä 2 % omasta painostaan, joten onhan siinä toki vähän reippaasti syötäväkin. Mutta kameran takana pitää olla vikkelä, jos haluaa kuvan muustakin kuin biisonin turvasta ruohossa. / And then some pictures of bisons and the scenery. It is really hard to get a good picture, since they seem to be eating all the time, so you can hardly see them holding the head up. Well, if you need to eat appr. 2% of your body weight daily, it might take some time.

Ja hevosilla ratsastaminen on sallittua saarella tietyillä reiteillä. / It is possible to come here and ride a horse in designated areas.

Ja sitten ne biisonit päättävät välilllä vaan ylittää tien. / And then sometimes the bisons just decide that the grass is greener on the other side of the road. And then you just wait.

Nämä hanka-antiloopit puolestaan juoksentelivat siellä saaren korkeimmalla kohdalla kivikossa. / The pronghorns were higher in the island, near the Visitor Center.

Tämä lienee vuoripyy, korjatkaa ihmeessä, jos ei ole. / I guess this is a chukar. Not sure though.

Salt Lake Cityhän on mormonien keskuspaikka ja kaupungin keskustassa sen kyllä huomaa. Temppeliaukiolla on useampiakin kirkon rakennuksia ja siinä heti ulkopuolella on niin Joseph Smith muistorakennus, kuin valtava toimistorakennus ynnä muuta. Utah'ssa on noin kolme miljoonaa asukasta, ja heistä noin 60 % on mormoneja. Salt Lake Cityssä mormoneja on eri tilastojen mukaan n. 30-40 %, tuolla pienemmissä kylissä ja kaupungeissa ja maaseudulla luku on paikoin 80 % ja ylikin. Kansallispuistoista toiseen ajellessa joskus tuli ajeltua pienten kylien ohi tai läpi ja kyllä siellä aina se yksi kirkko ja kirkontorni on keskellä kylää. Sunnuntait on vanhaan suomalaiseen tapaan pyhäpäiviä, eikä kaupat ole auki kuten suuressa osaa maata. Siinä temppeliaukion toisella puolella on ostoskeskus, mutta myös sen ravintolat oli suljettu. Löydettiin sentään joku auki oleva pikaruokapaikka sitten vähän kauempaa kuitenkin.

In the city there is the Temple Square with a lot of mormon buildings and temples. Utah´s population is about 3 million and appr. 60% are mormons. In Salt Lake City the percentage is appr. 30-40%, in the country side it can be 80% or even more. When we were driving in the southern part of Utah and crossing the small towns there was usually at least one mormon temple in them that you could easily spot. Since Sunday is the day to rest, the stores are closed. There is a shopping centre right across the street from the Temple Square, but even the restaurants were closed. We could find another place a bit further from the center, but this is good to know, if you ever travel in Utah on Sundays.

The is a visitor center next to it. They have a scale moder of the church there where you can see the different areas and rooms of the temple.

The Salt Lake Tabernacle ja sen urut. Täällä voi käydä kuuntelemassa viikottain konsertteja, mutta sunnuntain konsertti oli jo ehtinyt päättyä. / The Salt Lake Tabernacle´s organ. There are concerts here that you can go listen, but they had already finished for the day.

Aukion toisessa nurkassa on roomalaiskatolinen Cathedral of the Madeleine -kirkko. / On the other corner of the square there is a catholic church calle the Cathedral of the Madeleine.

Näitä vuoden 2002 talviolympialaisten muistoja jouduttiin oikeastaan oikein hakemalla hakemaan. Ne ovat nykyään osa University of Utah'n kampusaluetta ja osa yliopiston urheilustadionia. Oikeastaan muuta ei ollut paikoillaan kuin tämä plakaati, yksi pylväs ja sitten tuo olympiatulen pata. Joku lappu siinä oli, että jonkunlainen museo tai infokeskus avataan myöhemmin muualla, mutta nyt paikalla oli vain nämä. / We actually had to really look for the signs of the 2002 Winter Olympics. These are now in the campus of University of Utah and actually part of their stadium. So all we could find was this sign, one pole and the olympic cauldron. But this is where they held the Olympics (at least what they had on the stadium). There was a note saying that there will be an info center / museum later in another place, so hopefully there will be more to see later.

Koska meillä oli vielä aikaa, niin mentiin kuluttamaan sitä Red Butte Garden -puutarhaan. Paikkana tämä oli ihan kiva, mutta huhtikuussa monet kasvit olivat vielä lepotilassa. Mutta kymmeniä eri narsissilajikkeita ja useita kukkivia kirsikkapuita siellä kuitenkin oli jo huhtikuun alussakin. Ja upeat maisemat. / We had still time so we decided to go to the Red Butte Garden. It was early spring, so most of the plant were still not green or blossoming. But there were several different narcissus and blossoming cherry trees. And great scenery.

Ja ainakin yksi kivettynyt puu. / And at least one petrified tree.

Ja sitten lentokentälle ja myöhässä olleella koneella kotiin. Siinäpä se sitten olikin.

And then to the airport. The plane was late, but we got home still on Sunday. So, finally, this travel report is done.
