Aberdeen, Olympic National Forest

Ja viimein päästään tämän reissun viimeiseen päivään. Yövyimme Lakewoodissa lähellä Tacomaa, sillä tarkoituksena oli vielä ehtiä käydä sademetsässä tällä reissulla. Olin katsellut Washingtonin osavaltion eri kohteita ennen reissua ja todennut, että reissu Aberdeeniin ei kyllä ole ollenkaan järkevä, vaikka se onkin Kurt Cobainin synnyinpaikka. Mutta kas, siihenhän se osuu matkalla Olympia-nimiseen kansallispuistoon. Joten ei kun sinne. Tutunkuuloinen lause on päässyt myös kaupunginrajalla olevaan tauluun.

So the final days of our travels (in August). We slept in a hotel in Lakewood near Tacoma and were planning to see some rainforests. When I was planning our stay in Washington state I was bummed that Aberdeen was so far from Seattle and discarded the plan to go and visit this tiny town. But hey, it is almost on the way to the Olympic National Park, so yay! another tribute to Kurt Cobain was in order. "Come as you are".

Kurt Cobainin muistolle tehty puisto on todella pieni. Siis erittäin pieni. Eli tätä varten ei kyllä kannata Aberdeeniin ajella, jos ei sitten satu muutenkin olemaan seudulla kuten allekirjoittanut. Mutta onhan se nyt jotenkin sykähdyttävää olla ja katsella Wishkah-joen mutaista sillanalusta, johon kolmasosa Kurtin tuhkista on ripoteltu. Siinä ne vuoroveden myötä liikkuvat edestakaisin: From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah.

So this is the "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah". The Kurt Cobain memorial park is actually really tiny. So tiny that you almost miss it when you drive here. But the town is tiny with financial struggles as well. But this is the place, the place that Kurt wrote about in "Something In The Way" and where one third of his ashes are scattered. This is where he started his life and where he was from. If you ever were a Kurt fan you will understand. <3

Aberdeenistä matka jatkui siis kohti Olympic National Park -kansallispuistoa. Oltiin kuultu Seattlen risteilyllä, että Washingonin osavaltiossa on sademetsiä ja olihan ne tsekattava. Nämä ovat siis näitä viileänlauhkeita sademetsiä, eli ihan eri juttu kuin ne trooppiset. Jännä sinänsä, että vaikuttavat ensin ihan tavalliselta suomalaiselta metsältä, mutta ilma on selkeästi kosteampaa ja sammal- ja naavakasvustoa on selkeästi enemmän. Hiki täällä tuli helposti ja houkutteli hyttysiä, joten ihan kauhean pitkää vaellusta ei lähdetty tekemään, mutta kierreltiin polkuja kuitenkin jokunen tovi.

Then we headed to the Olympic National Park. While we were in the cruise in Seattle, we were told that Seattle is not actually so rainy as people think. But there are temperate rain forests in the area. A must see! It was kind of funny actually. The look a lot like Finnish forests. Except that they are more humid and there is different kind of moss and beard moss everywhere. And you get warm and sweaty really fast when you are walking around in the forest.

Olympic National Park -kierroksemme jatkui ja pysähdyimme Ruby Beach -rannalle ihailemaan maisemia. Jälkikäteen ajateltuna tämä Olympic National Park -kierros olisi pitänyt tehdä jonain toisena päivänä. Oltiin katottu tätä reittiä ja todettu, ettei tätä varmasti pysty yhden päivän aikana tekemään. No olisi sen varmasti ehtinyt, kun ei täällä ollut sellaisia vuoria ja vuortenylityksiä kuin Kaliforniassa on parhaillaan ja jotka hidastavat matkaa tolkuttomasti. Mutta hyvä, että päästiin katsastamaan edes nämä paikat reissun aikana.

And next stop was Ruby Beach. This is again a really beautiful place and definitely worth a visit. Now thinking back we should have done this trip around the Olympic National Park some other day when we would have had time to do the whole loop. But we thought we would not have time to do that, since that kind of mileage in California with the mountains and mountain passes is kind of impossible to do in one day. But well, you live and you learn. At least we got to see these cool places.

Ruby Beachillä tuli jännästi lammesta tai järvestä vesi näiden pikkukivien alta ja juoksi mereen pienen pieninä puroina.

At Ruby Beach. The water from the small lake or pond went under the tiny rocks and then as tiny water streams to the ocean.

Sitten oli aika lähteä ajamaan takaisin ja kohti lentokenttää. Mutta ei ensin ajamatta Karjala Roadin yli. Nimen historiaa en saanut selvitettyä, mutta kuvahan siitä oli tietty otettava. Ja sitten eteen osui vielä "periamerikkalainen" junaristeys roikkuvine liikennevaloineen, niin räpsäistiin kuva siitäkin. Ja ei kun kauhealla kiireellä (oikeasti tuli kiire, Tacoman kohdalla näyttää olevan järkyttävät liikennejumit joka kerta) lentokoneeseen ja kohti kotia. 

And then it was time to head to the airport and home. These pictures are here just because "Karjala" is the part of Finland that we lost to Soviet Union during the WWII. I wonder what is the history for this road here. And then we really had to rush to the airport. I was almost certain at some point that we would not made it. There seems to be a traffic jam in Tacoma every day. If you are ever in this area be prepared for that. The traffic was barely moving and we traveled like 5 miles in 30 minutes and my stress levels were rising. We did make it to our plane, but there was no extra time to spend in the airport. Well, all is well that ends well.

Oli kyllä hyvä reissu, vaikka ei kaikkiin paikkoihin päästykään, mihin meinattiin. Seattlen ja Vancouverin alueella on myös suosittua käydä valassafareilla, koska siinä Seattlen ulkopuolella olevassa lahdessa San Juan Islandin vieressä elelee miekkavalasparvi, joka asustaa siinä käsittäkseni vuoden ympäri. Reissu olisi kuitenkin ollut enemmän tai vähemmän koko päivän reissu ja se Seattlen päivä, jolle reissun olisi saanut vielä varattua oli pilvinen ja tuulinenkin, joten helposti merisairaaksi tulevana jätettiin väliin. Tosin lentokoneessa vieressämme olleet matkustajat selailivat Alaskan risteilyn esitteitä niin ahkerasti, että iski matkakuume lähteä vielä joskus Seattlesta Alaskan risteilylle ja se risteilyhän ohittaa myös ne San Juanin saaret..

It was really an awesome 9 days. We did not do everything that we planned, but we did something else instead. We had also planned on going to a whale safari. The San Juan Islands are a home to a resident orca population that live in the area. It would have been a full day trip and the day that they still had tickets the weather was not great. I get sea sick easily, so we skipped that for now. We do have plans to go back some day to visit Victoria and the orcas and else. Maybe a cruise to Alaska boarding from Seattle. Who knows. 

Portland, Mt Hood & Columbia River Gorge

Tämä näyttää nyt olevan pisin matkakertomus koskaan, tai ainakin hitaimmin julkaistut osat. Tuntuu vaan, että päivät on niin täynnä, ettei jaksa kotona enää avata tietokonetta ollenkaan. Varsinkin kun tällä läppärillä päivityksestä huolimatta osa kirjaimista vaan häviää edelleen. Mutta asiaan. Portlandissa suuntasimme The Grottoon (National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother), eli katoliseen pyhättöön, jossa on pieneen luolaan tehty alttari ja kaunis, rauhallinen puutarha kirkon ja patsaiden ympärille. Erittäin rauhallinen paikka, jossa lähes ensimmäisinä päivän vierailijoina kävelimme keskellä metsää hämähäkinverkot kasvoillamme..

This travel journal seems to take forever to complete, since I have not had time to blog or time to open the computer to do anything extra lately. Anyways here are the travels in and from Portland. As soon as I saw pictures of the Grotto (National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother), I wanted to visit there. This was a really serene, peaceful and beaufitul sanctuary. We were there right when it opened and we almost the only ones there. So it was really quiet and we walked around the garden with spider webs in the paths (and soon in our faces too). The next steps from our day we owe a big thank you to Andres that listed his favorite spots in the area for us. Thank you so much! We followed your travel plan almost to the finest details. :)

Porlandista lähdettiin ajelemaan kohti Mt. Hoodia, jonka näkymät olivat huikeat. Mikäs tämän parempi paikka syödä brunchiaan vuorenrinteellä?

The first stop after Portland was Mt Hood. Beautiful scenery and a wonderful place to enjoy your brunch.

Mt Hoodilta lähettiin lähdettiin ajelemaa alas ja ajeltiin Columbia-joen vartta. Columbia-joki on Tyyneenmereen laskeva, luoteisen Yhdysvallan suurin joki, joka vaihtelee leveydeltään jonkun verran. Maisemat joen varrella ovat kyllä upeita.

From Mt Hood down to the Columbia river. Columbia is the largest river in Pacific Northwest region and the scenery is really beautiful. This is just not some water, there is a lot of water in here. And some nice artwork on the bridges that cross the river.

Columbia-joki on Yhdysvaltain suurin vesivoimaan valjastettu joki. Ja Bonneville pato on erittäin merkittävä sähköntuottaja. Padon läpi virtaa vettä yli 5000 m³/sekunnissa. Täältä löytyy myös lohiportaat ja vieressä on kalankasvattamo.

Since Columbia river is one of the most important rivers to provide electric power, of course there is a damn. And not just any damn, but a huge Bonneville Damn, which provides about 5 billion kWh of electricity each year. Impressive. There is also a fishery next to it and fish ladders. And a tiny hint to travelers: this is the last place to use a restroom if you are heading to the River Gorge. Just saying..

Ja sitten päästiin sinne parhaimpaan paikkaan, eli Columbia River Gorge. Eräänlaiseen kuiluun tai kanjoniin, jossa tuntuu olevan toinen toistaan kauniimpia vesiputouksia. Tässä ensimmäisenä Horsetail falls niin alhaalta kuin mäen yläosassa myös pienemmältä putoukselta ja lähteeltä. Pitihän siellä käydä itseään kastelemassa vähän vesisuihkun alla, lämmin päivä ja kaikkea.

And the the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, a canyon with several beautiful water falls. First we headed to the Horsetail Falls. We even climbed up the hill to see the pond and got our (or mine at least) head cooled in the refreshing water. It was a warm day after all.

Sitten yritettiin päästä katsomaan Oneonta Gorgen vesiputousta. Matka kuitenkin tyssäsi tähän. Meille olisi ollut ihan ok jopa kastella kengät (ota mukaan vesitossut, jos olet matkalla tänne), mutta matka tyssäsi suureen ihmisjoukkoon, eikä tästä kohdasta yksinkertaisesti olisi päässyt eteenpäin pitkään aikaan.

We were trying to go and visit the Oneonta Gorge as well, but it seemed that dozens of people had the same idea. So we got this far. To pass from here it would have taken a long time to wait all the other people to pass. But hey there is something to see next time, too. Wear your water shoes and swimming suits for this one and you can pass the crowd more easily.

Mutta onneksi jäljellä oli vielä Multnomah Falls -vesiputoukset, joka on se suurin ja näyttävin vesiputous tällä alueella. Oltiin täällä siis lauantaina päivällä elokuussa ja tuntui, että koko Portland oli täällä samaan aikaan. Ei siis saatu autoa parkkiin, jonoa toisesta suunnasta oli noin 200 metriä parkkipaikalle, joten sillä aikaa kun puoliso kierteli parkkipaikan ympäri, kävin nappaamassa kuvat putouksesta. Olisi ollut kiva kiivetä tuonne sillallekin, mutta minkäs teet.

And then there was still the Multnomah Falls. This is the biggest and most impressive waterfalls in the area. We were here on Saturday afternoon in August. And so was half of Portland. Finding a parking spot was impossible, so we just had to quickly run to take the pics while someone was waiting in the car driving around the parking lot. Well, I can totally understand why people want to visit this place.

Sitten oli aika taas ajella lähemmäksi Seattlea, vielä viimeiset pysähdykset Crown Point -nimisessä paikassa, jossa voi vielä ihastella kaunista Columbia-jokea.

And one last stop before heading back to Washington state. This is Crown Point and the beautiful views to the Columbia river. If you ever have time to visit this area, you should.
