Road trip: Badlands NP & Sioux Falls

Tämä postaus karkasi jo hetkeksi julkaistuksi, vaikka piti tallentaa esikatseluna. Noh, kirjoitetaanpa nyt jotain lihaa luiden ympärille kuviin. Aamu Rapid Cityssä alkoi vähän sateisena ja pilvisenä, joten päätettiin vain pikaisesti käydä kaupungin keskustassa. Siellä kun on tien reunassa pronssipatsaina maan entisiä presidenttejä. Olisi ollut kiva kävellä keskustassa ja bongailla näitä, mutta tällä kertaa oltiin sokerista, eikä haluttu kastua. Matkaa kun oli tarkoitus jatkaa vielä reissun viimeiseen kansallispuistoon, Badlands National Parkiin, ja siitä sitten vielä vähän matkaa jatkaen seuraavan yön majapaikkaan.

I already accidentally posted this with just pictures, so I am trying quickly "add some meat" around them. It was a bit rainy and cloudy at Rapid City when we woke up, so we just quickly drove through the downtown area. They have this "City of Presidents" in downtown, former presidents as bronze statues next to the roads. It would have been nice to just wander there, but we decided to leave and drive towards the Badlands National Park. I do not understand really why it is called Badlands, since it really is a beautiful place. After the park we still had some driving to do to hit the pit stop for that day.

Tien vieressä oli pitkin reittiä isoja mainoksia, joissa sanottiin Wall Drug Store. No pakkohan tänne oli pysähtyä. Tämä on vähän niinkuin Keskisten kauppa, mutta ei toisaalta sinne päinkään. Kauppa on perustettu vuonna 1931 ja siitä lähtien kaupasta on matkailijat saaneet lasillisen ilmaista jäävettä (ja kahvikin olisi kait ollut vain 5 senttiä/muki). Täällä on seinillä kaikenlaisia täytettyjä eläimiä ja kaupasta saa varmaan mitä tahansa aurinkorasvasta matkamuistoihin ja ruuasta buutseihin. / There was a lot of signs saying Wall Drug Store along the route, so we did stop at this store, that is like a small village. Founded in 1931 it has always provided tourists a free glass of ice water (we did not have one) and cheap coffee. You can find pretty much everything from here and they have walls full of memorabilia, art etc.

Säät eivät kyllä olleet oikein suosiolliset Badlandissa ja päivä oli todella pilvinen ja sateinen. Joten kuvatkin paikasta ovat enemmän tai vähemmän todella harmaat, mikä on sääli, koska silmiinkantamattomiin avaraa tilaa ja kalliomuodostelmia toisessa kohdassa olisivat kyllä olleet parempienkin kuvien arvoisia. / The weather was not very favorable, it was raining on and off and there were some clouds too. So the pictures are a bit gray. That is sad really, because this place would probably be pretty awesome in perfect lightning.

Ajettiin puistoon Pinnacles Entrance -sisääntulon kautta ja lähdettiin ajelemaan kohti Sage Creek Basin Overlookia, joka on muistaakseni tämä paikka. Puiston läpihän kulkee yksi ajotie, eikä mitään puiston ympärimenevää tietä, joten siinä tuli vähän edestakaisin ajamista, mutta meillä oli hyvin aikaa (varsinkin kun kelien takia ei ollut suunnitelmissa kauheasti vaellella). / We drove to the Pinnacles Entrance and to the park and headed towards Sage Creek Basin Overlook (if I remember correctly, this is it). There is no loop road, but a road that goes through the park, so when driving from Pinnacles Entrance to Sage Creek Basin, you have to actually drive back the same route for a bit. But we had plenty of time, and it is not a huge park anyways, so you should do that, if you are ever in the area.

Vähän sellaisia Tanssii Susien kanssa viboja näissä maisemissa kyllä on. Tämä alue on suurin maan preerioista, ja siltä se kyllä todellakin näytti. / Are you getting the Dances with Wolves vibes from these? This is the largest grass prairie in the country.

Vähän Yellowstonen jälkeen harmitti, ettei siellä bongattu yhtään paksusarvilammasta, joita siellä kuulemma oli. No, takaisin Sage Creekista ajaessa muutama sellainen oli ilmestynyt tien viereen. Noi sarvethan on ihan tolkuttoman painavat. Montanassa oli yhdessä visitor centerissä esillä tällaiset ja niitä sai pitää kädessä. Painavat 6-15 kg, joten vahvat niskat saa olla niitä kantaessa. / I was bit bummed that we did not see any bighorn sheeps in Montana or Yellowstone. They even had warning signs in Montana along the road, but zero sheeps. When we drove back from the Sage Creek these were there alongside the road. We got to hold one horn in Montana in a Visitor Center, and I can tell you, that these are heavy. They can weigh up to 30 pounds and be 10% of the body weight. I could not do that.

Tien vieressä on tasaisin välein erilaisia pysähdyspaikkoja ja näköalapaikkoja, joilla on kaikilla omat nimensä. En kyllä millään pysty kuvia ja nimiä yhdistämään nyt kartan kohtiin. Kivimuodostelmihan täällä on vaikka minkälaisia tasalakisista kukkuloista erittäin "ryppyisiin" muodostelmiin ja värejä kivissä oli laidasta laitaan. Tältä alueelta on löytynyt myös useita fossiileita eri aikakausilta, dinosauruksista lähtien. / There are several overlooks along the road. I can not match the names and the pictures any more, but the scenery changes quickly. From grass prairie to buttes and pinnacles and spires. They have also found several fossils from this area, including dinosaurs.

Sadekeli ei todellakaan ole kaikkein paras aika käydä tuolla. Kävin vaan "äkkiä kuvaamassa tuota" ja kipusin mäen päälle. No se hieno hiekka yhdistettynä siihen veteen on sitten tietenkin jotain saventapaista mömmöä, joka jämähtää sentin kerroksena kengän pohjaan ja sitä on lähes mahdotonta saada pois. Ja, fiksuna ihmisenä tein tämän saman "äkkiä vaan kipasen tossa" sekä lenkkareilla että sandaleilla... Jeps. / "I will just quickly climb there and take a picture." That compined with the fine sand and the bit of a rain equals this. And this, whatever everything it is, just sticks to the shoes like crazy. I had like an half an inch extra and noticed it only after the shoes "feeling funny". So keep an extra pair of shoes, if it is raining. Or two extra, since I ended up with my sandals AND my sneakers looking like this. Lucky me.

Eipä se vuokra-autokaan ihan kaikkein puhtain tämän reissun jälkeen ollut. Ne noissa vuokra-autofirmoissa varmaan tykkää meistä, kun me vuokrataan auto ja palautetaan muutaman päivän jälkeen tuhansia maileja enemmän mittarissa ja pölyä tippuvana. Tämä autokin tosin käytettiin autopesussa ennen palauttamista. / The rental car also looked like it had gone through a lot. They must really love us at the rental offices. We rent a car, hardly used and return it a couple of days later with thousands of miles more in it. And dusty. Yeah, well we did wash the car before returning it, but I bet there were some dirt on it anyways somewhere.

Tällaista kaikkea siellä siis näkyi. Lisäksi käveltiin se pieni Fossil Exhibit Trail tihkusateessa. Siinä tosin esillä on vaan fossiilien jäljennöksiä sellaisissa infotauluissa, mutta ihan informatiivinen se silti oli. / So this is what it looked like. We also did the short Fossil Exhibit Trail (you do not have to walk in mud there). They only had replicas on boards there, but it was really informative. All the kids on the trail seemed to like it very much.

Badlandista ajeltiin Sioux Fallsille, jossa yritettiin löytää jotain ruokaa. Näitä tällaisia rakennuksiahan tosin näkyy muuallakin, mutta kun nyt oli oikein kamera mukana, niin tuli räpsäistyä kuva. / Next we headed to Sioux Falls. This was just somewhere where we tried to find some food. Not from the career center of course, but near there.

Sioux Fallsissa on joka kuukauden ensimmäisenä perjantaina erilaisia taide- ja musiikkitilaisuuksia. Ja mehän sitten satuttiin osumaan paikalle juuri silloin. Käytiin vähän kuljeskelemassa ympäriinsä ja kuuntelemassa musiikkia. / The first Friday of every month there is different art and music enertainment in downtown Sioux Falls. So we walked a little and listened to some music.

Ja sitten suunnattiin katsomaan ne itse putouksetkin, josta kaupunki on saanut nimensä. Sioux Falls on noin 150 000 asukkaallaan Etelä-Dakotan suurin kaupunki ja yksi nopeimmin kasvavista kaupungeista koko maassa (prosentuaalisesti). Sinänsä melko paljon asukkaita, kun ajattelee, että 199,729 km²:n kokoisessa osavaltiossa on yhteensäkin vain noin 850 000 asukasta. / Then we headed to see the actual falls too. Sioux Falls, the city, is the biggest city in South Dakota and I read that it is one of the most rapidly growing cities in the country, with appr. 150 thousand people. When compared to the whole population of the state, appr. 850 thousand, it is pretty much.

Putousten vieressä olevaan torniinkin vielä ehdittiin kiivetä ennen sen kiinnimenoa. Erityisesti sykähdyttivät näkymät ja se, ettei tuonne ole pääsymaksua. / There is this tower next to the falls and we still made it to the top before them closing if for the night. There is no fee and the view is great

Joku oli lähtenyt ulkoiluttamaan tällaista autoa. / Someone had decided to drive this car that day. What a beauty.

Sioux Falls on oikeasti ihan siinä Minnesotan rajapinnassa, joten olihan sitä pakko käydä kääntymässä sitten sielläkin pikaisesti. Ei kyllä ehditty nähdä kuin se huoltoasema, jossa käytiin tankkaamassa ja hervottoman kokoiset maissipellot molemmin puolin tietä. / Since Sioux Falls is right next to the border of South Dakota and Minnesota, we just had to drive to Minnesota (I had never been there before). We did not see much, except the gas station that we visited, but oh my gosh there is a lot of corns growing in the fields. I truly do know now what the expression "in the middle of the corn field" means.

Pientä pintaremonttia vailla. / Needing a bit of remodeling?

Olimme varanneet yön Canistotasta U-bar Motel -nimisestä paikasta, kun sillä oli hyviä palautteita. Sioux Fallsista tuntui olevan melko vaikea löytää kohtuuhintaista majoitusta. Ehkä majoituskapasiteetti ei oikein pysy mukana kaupungin kasvussa tai jotain. Motelli oli ihan ok, mutta koska sinne ei oikeastaan päässyt mitään moottoritietä tms., niin matka oli ajassa vähän pidempi kuin kartasta oltiin kuviteltu. Ihan keskellä ei mitäänhän se oli, mutta ihan ok paikka. Tuolla Canistotassa ei kahta huoltsikkaa, yhtä kauppaa ja paria ravintolaa lukuunottamatta oikeastaan ole kuin joku todella suosittu kiropraktikon vastaanotto. Sen uskollisimpia asiakkaita ovat naapuriosavaltioista tulevat amishit, jotka siis myös usein yöpyvät tuolla. Meidänkin siellä ollessa useammassakin huoneessa yöpyi amisheja. Jonkun verranhan täällä keskilännessä muutenkin näkyi näitä vanhojen kristillisen suuntauksen edustajia, kuten mennoniitteja. Puvuista ja hatuista vaan tunnistaa helposti.

No, mutta jälleen oltiin ihan rättipoikki, joten nautittiin rauhasta ja hiljaisuudesta ja nukuttiin kuin tukit. Matkan tässä vaiheessa ei enää ollut jäljellä kuin 2,5 päivää reissua ja edessä oli lähinnä autossa istumista ja matkan varrella olevissa kaupungeissa käväisemisiä. Kaikki vaellus- ja lenkkeilykamat sai siis pakata laukkuihin ja yrittää etsiä edes vähän siistimpää t-paitaa ja shortsia päälle.

We had booked a room from the U-bar Motel in Canistota. The hotel site showed that when trying to find something from Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls did not have many options for the dates that we where there and some really pricey, so we picked Canistota. It had nice reviews and it was a nice, clean place. The distance to Sioux Falls was a bit more than we thought time wise, since there is no higways with 65 mph/h going between the places, and it is literally in the middle of the corn field. Except for a shop, some restaurants and a couple gas stations there is a really nothing much, but a popular chiroprator office in Canistota. It is really popular amont the amishes living in the states near South Dakota. I have never had such quiet neighbours, and polite, in any hotel/motel ever. Again, after a busy day we slept like babies. The next days in the road trip it was pretty much just driving and some cities along the way, the natural parks and monuments part was now done.

Road trip: Devils Tower, Mount Rushmore & Fort Hays

Seuraavana aamuna oli edessä vielä ajomatkaa Wyomingin rajan tuntumaan. Kuultiin sivukorvalla Yellowstonessa muutaman henkilön keskustelu, pariskunta oli ajamassa Yellowstonesta Mount Rushmorelle ja keskusteluun osallistunut mieshenkilö puolestaan oli tullut Mount Rushmorelta Yellowstoneen. Vaihtelivat siinä vinkkejä, Pohjois-Dakotassa eivät keksineet mitään syytä käydä, mutta se mies kertoi pariskunnalle, että Devils Towerissa kannattaa käydä. Googlasimme siis paikan, ja olimme vähän kahden vaiheilla, että kannattaako paikan takia tehdä ylimääräistä 1,5 tunnin lenkkiä. Paikka on kuitenkin tämän maan ensimmäinen National Monument -kohde, ja lisäksi se löytyy aika monelta "paikkoja, jotka pitää nähdä" -listalta. Todettiin, että jos ei nyt mennä, niin ei sinne sitten taas ikinä asiakseen lähdetä, joten GPS siis ohjaamaan sinne. Ja oli kyllä ihan hauska lisäys reittiin.

We had still some driving to do for the morning to get to the border of Wyoming, so we left early. We heard a conversation in Yellowstone where this couple was talking to a man (that they did not know). The couple was heading to Mount Rushmore from Yellowstone and the guy had pretty much done the trip other way around. According to the guy, you should not skip Devils Tower, if you are in the area. So we did some googling. We were hesitant at first to make an extra 1.5 hour drive because of this, but since it is the first National Monument in this country, and it is listed in many "places to visit" lists, we decided to make the detour. We figured that we would probably not come back here in the near future, or ever, so it was now or never. And it was worth it.

Ajomatkan maisema Wyomingissa koostui pääsääntöisesti pelloista. Pelloilla näytti olevan melko vuorotellen joko hevosia tai lehmiä, ja ajoittaisia vanhanmallisia tuulimyllyjä ja öljypumppuja. / The scenery in Wyoming was pretty much fields and field, with some windmills (the good old road trip movie style ones) and pumpjacks. And cows and horses at the side of the road.

Ja tämä kivi on siis se tuliperäisestä kivestä muodostunut yksittäinen isompi kohouma, eli Devils Tower. Kiven ympäri menee sellainen 2 kilometrin reitti, joka me käveltiin. On hieman eri näköinen eri puolilta. / This is the laccholitic butte, the only one in the area, called Devils Tower. There is a 1.3 mile trail around it and we walked that. It has slightly different views on different sides.

Alue on muun muassa lakota-, cheyenne- ja kiowa-heimojen pyhää aluetta ja kesäkuussa (jolloin olimme siellä) monet alkuperäisheimot järjestävät täällä vuosittaisia seremonioitaan. Kivi on myös suosittu kiipeilykohde, mutta kesäkuussa on vapaaehtoinen kiipeilyrajoitus. Käytännössä kivelle saa kiivetä (ja mekin nähtiin muutama kiipeilijä siellä), mutta periaatteessa on sovittu, ettei näin kesäkuussa pahemmin tehdä. / The area is a sacred place to the native americans in this area. In June (when we there) the native american hold their ceremonies here. The butte is also very popular among climbers, but in June there is a voluntary climbing ban to the butte. Most of the climbers do respect that, even though it is not mandatory. We only saw a couple of climber while we were there.

Itse kiven synnystä on useita erilaisia tarinoita ja legendoja. Kiveä ympäröivillä alueilla on punaista hiekkakiveä. Tarina kertoo, että buffalot, ihmiset ja eläimet järjestivät kilpajuoksun osoittaakseen, kenellä on eniten valtaa. Matka oli pitkä ja tuskainen ja buffalot ja eläimet juoksivat veripäissään, veren valuessa nenästä. Tämä värjäsi maan punaiseksi, ja vajotti maan. Keskellä oleva maa kohosi muodostaen Devils Tower -kiven. / There is a lot of stories and native american legends about this place. One of the story is about the great race. Buffaloes believed once that they are the most powerful creatures. Human did not agree. So they held a race between buffaloes, humans and other animals. It was a long and hard race, and the animals were bleeding from their nose. That is why the land turned red (red sandstone), and sank. At the same time the middle of the land rose up and is now the butte.

Tämä pikkuinen jyrsijä juoksenteli siinä polun vieressä ja useampikin ihminen yritti saada siitä kuvan. Some people tried to take a picture of it. Finally it ran to safety. The safe haven was found between my son´s sneakers. There it was probably trying to figure out what kind of tree that was.

Siinä Devils Towerin parkkipaikalta alas ajellessa on sellainen niitty, jossa sanottiin olevan preeriakoiria. Ja niitä todellakin oli ja vilisteli siinä kymmenittäin häviten välillä koloihinsa. / When driving away from the butte, but still in the area, there is a field that has a sign saying that this is the home of the prairie dogs. And it really is, there was dozens of these eating and then hiding underground.

Seuraava kohde olikin sitten Etelä-Dakotan puolella oleva Mount Rushmore. Mikä kummallinen idea onkaan ollut keksiä räjäyttää ja louhia kallioiden huippuihin muutaman presidentin kuva. Tämä oli jotenkin pienemmän oloinen alue kuin elokuvista voisi päätellä. Edustalla on kaikkien osavaltioiden liput ja taustalla sitten nämä neljä presidenttiä kalliossa. / The next stop was Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. It was a bit smaller than we had thought, but it is still probably massive from up close (where you cannot go). In the front you have the flags from every state and then you have your four presidents.

Gutzon Borglund on kuvanveistäjä, joka suunnitteli tämän teoksen. Eli Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln ja Roosevelt. / Here is the story of why these four men were chosen to be the ones carved (and blasted) to the mountain.

Alueella kulkee suhteellisen lyhyt Presidential Trail -reitti, josta pääsee näkemään monumenttia eri suunnista ja kivenkoloista. / There is a Presidential Trail in the area. It is not very long, but you can see the monument from different angles and peak behind some rocks etc.

Kuvanveistäjän studiossa on tämä teoksen pienoismalli (vartaloitahan tosin ei itse kallioon sitten tehty). Tämä on mittasuhteiltaan 1:12. Kuvanveistäjän apulaiset mittasivat tästä etäisyydet langalla ja kertoivat sen 12:lla, jotta he tiesivät, että mistä kohdasta kalliota piti räjäyttää kiveä ja kuinka paljon. Muistaakseni yli 90 % kallion louhintatöistä tehtiin räjäyttämällä ja vasta loput taltoilla ym. käsin. Ja täällä oli myös pienoismalli kiven taakse suunnitellusta luolastosta. Teoksen takana todellakin on jonkunlainen pieni luola (isompi jäi tekemättä), ja siellä on pääsääntöisesti tähän projektiin liittyneitä papereita. Ei siis kuulemma kaikenlaisia liittovaltion salaisia papereita niin kuin elokuvat ja salaliittoteoriat antavat ymmärtää. / This is this minuature of the sculpture in the Sculptor Studio. This is the model in 1:12 inch scale. The workers were measuring this and then multiplied the length by 12 in order to know, where to use dynamite and how much in the mountain. Most of the work was done by blasting the rock away and only about 10% was actually carved by hand. In this room there is also a model of the secret room behind the sculpture. They were planning to do a bigger room, but there is only a smaller space with project relevant info. So all the movies and conspiracy theories that say that all the most important document of this country / a mass of gold are there, are false infomation. Or are they?

Joku sanoi, että tämä polun lähellä juoksellut otus on metsämurmeli, joten uskotaan nyt sitä tyyppiä. / This, probably a groundhog, was running there next to the trail.

Olimme varanneet majoituksen Rapid Citystä ja ajelimme sinnepäin Mount Rushmorelta lähtiessä, kun bongasin tämän ilmoituksen. Tanssii susien kanssa -elokuvaa on pääsääntöisesti kuvattu parilla farmilla South Dakotassa ja Badlands-kansallispuistossa. Nämä lavasteet on siirretty sieltä farmin kuvauspaikalta myöhemmin tänne Fort Haysiin ihmisten ihasteltavaksi. Ja pakkohan tähän oli pysähtyä. / On our way to Rapid City, SD, where we were staying the next night, I saw a sign saying "Dances of Wolves film set". Of course we had to stop for this. I love that movie. The movie was mostly filmed in South Dakota in some very large private farms and in Badlands National Park. These have been brought from the filming location to Fort Hays so that everyone visiting here can see them.

Kotiinpäästyämme lainasin kirjastosta tuon elokuvan ja tarkistin, että kyllä se siinä näkyvä rakennus erehdyttävästi tätä muistuttaa. Ihan siinä elokuvan alkupuolella, kun Kevin Costnerin roolihahmo käy hakemassa ohjeet siitä palveluspaikastaan, niin hän vierailee tämän näköisessä kylälssä (oheisrekvisiitta ei taida tosin kaikki olla elokuvassa). / After the trip I actually went to the library and checked the movie out. My son had never seen the movie and so we watched it together. And indeed the buildings in the earlier part from the small town look like this (the pics above and below).

Oli siellä jotain muutakin rekvisiitta, joka ei liittynyt elokuviin. / There were also some non-movie related cool stuff.

Ja taas oli päivä kulunut ja oli aika suunnata hotellille. / And it was late again and time to go to the hotel and get some rest.

Seuraavalle päivälle oli sitten luvassa vähän lisää Tanssii susien kanssa -maisemia, sillä ensimmäisenä listalla oli vierailu Badlands National Park -kansallispuistossa, jossa tosiaan on osa kyseisestä elokuvasta kuvattu. Valitsemamme hotelli oli ihan ok, mutta ihme ylimääräistä säätämistä (mm. huone ei ollut valmis ajoissa, laskuttivat ylimääräistä), joten jätetään hotelli mainostamatta. Mount Rushmoren lähellä näytti myös olevan jotain kivannäköisiä (ja varmaan kalliita) majoituksia, jos joku joskus sinne päin suuntaa. Alueella oleva Black Hills National Forest on kuulemma myös käymisen arvoinen, mutta meillä ei ollut aikaa ihan kaikelle.

The plan for the next day was Badlands National Park first and then driving further. So more Dances with Wolves scenery. Yay! (I did tell you that I lovelovelove that movie and the scenery in that film, right?) We stayed in Rapid City in a decent motel, nothing fancy, but there was so much extra hassle (the room was not ready when it was supposed, extra charges etc.), so I have no reason to tell you the name of that. All I am saying is, please read the hotel reviews before booking in this city. But yeah, there was a bed and a shower and some breakfast, so we were good. I hear the Black Hills National Forest is worth a visit too, but we did not have time for that.
