Utah 5: Arches National Park

Seuraavana aamuna olikin sitten aikainen herätys. Olimme päättäneet vähän myös mennä trailia pitkin kävellen, eikä huristella vain autolla. Paras aika siihen on siten mahdollisimman aikainen aamu, kun aurinko ei vielä porota täysillä ja lämpötilat on vielä siedettäviä. Arches on nimensä mukaisesti täynnä kivestä muotoutuneita kaaria. Niistä ehkä yksi kuuluisimpia on Delicate Arch, joka on joka mainoksessa alueella ja Utahin autojen rekisterikilvissä jne. Päätimme siis tarpoa sinne heti aamukahdeksalta (kesällä, kun päivä on pidempi ja ilma on parempi, kuulemma auringonnousun aika on paras aika, jos ei halua liikkua liian kuumalla). Kyseisen kaaren näkee kyllä toisellakin puolelta, jonne pääsee autolla katselupaikalle tai pitää vain kävellä yksi mäki toiselle katselupaikalle. Me haluttiin kuitenkin mennä itse kaarelle. Eikä kyllä siis tajuttu ensin, että tätä reittiä pitkin todellakin pääsee itse sinne kaarelle asti. Jotenkin sitä luulisi, että pääsyä tällaiselle eroosion kuluttamalle luonnonnähtävyydelle rahoitettaisiin jotenkin kulkua, mutta ei. Meidän onneksi siis.

Reitti kulkee ensin kalliota ylöspäin ja sitä ehtii jo jonkun verran huokailla matkalla, että vieläkö tätä kestää kauan. Sitten mennään kivikkoisempaa, tasaisempaa maastoa, kallion reunalla olevaa polkua ja päädytään lopulta perille.

The next morning we headed to Arches National Park. Everyone told us to go as early in the morning as possible before it is too hot. With limited amount of shade and because of the semi-desert climate and the elevation, the cooler the better. At least in April, the early morning was not too early, we headed to the park after 7 am and to our hike around at 8 am. But I have heard stories of people going on their hikes at 6 am in the summer. We had decided to do at least one hike on a moderately doable trail. Since you can see the picture of the Delicate Arch everywhere from ads to the Utah license plates, that was the place to go. You have two options to see the Delicate Arch, drive on the other side of the arch and make a short walk to one of the view points or you can hike to the arch from the Wolf Ranch parking lot about 1.5 to 2 miles. We decided to do the hike since we wanted to go to the arch itself. I did not actually know that you can go to the arch, I thought that there would be at least some kind of restricted area near the arch, since it is a unique piece of natural wonders. Well, there isn't, so you can go as near as you want.

The hiking route (it is really not a trail in the beginning) goes first up to the rock and then in a more balanced rocky area, then a narrow path on the edge of the rock and then after some climbing you are there.

Nämä ensimmäiset kuvat yrittävät kuvata reissun edistymistä ja yleisiä maisemia reitin varrelta. Tässä on jo kävelty jonkun verran kuvan oikealla olevalta parkkipaikalta. Seuraavissa kuvissa sitten on jo vähän jouduttu nousemaan kalliota ylöskin päin, välillä pakollisia juomataukoja ja hengähdystaukoja pitäen. / The first pictures here are from the first part of the trail. Well it is not really a trail at some points. We left the parking lot in the right and after a short trail started to climb the hill.

Tässä on päästy jo melkein kallioreitin loppuun, jonka jälkeen tulee vähän lievemmässä kulmassa kiipeävää pientä kivikkoista maastoa. / First leg almost done, after this the trail is a bit easier for a while. I probably looked really exhausted already, because some hikers coming down kept telling me that I am almost done with the hardest part already...

Kun oltiin päästy se nousuosuus loppuun, oli aikaa vähän katsella jo maisemiakin ja näitä joka paikassa näkyviä erilaisia koloja ja kaaria. / After climbing up the first hill we had some energy to look at the scenery as well. So the arches begin.

Tässä on sitten tämä melkein viimeinen osuus reitistä, suhteellisen kapea polkua ja jokunen kymmentä metriä pudotusta toisella puolella. Oli ihan fiksua lähteä aamulla, jolloin kulkijoita oli oikeastaan vain yhteen suuntaan, eikä tarvinnut yrittää väistellä vastaantulijoita. Tämä kuva on muuten siis otettu tulosuuntaan päin, koska aurinko heijasti toiseen suuntaan kuvan ihan söhryksi. / So then it was time to take the trail along the rock. There is tens of yards of a drop here, if you slip. It was actually a really good idea to go here early, when there are not yet so much people there and you do not need to let them pass so much and try to find a safe looking spot to stand while letting them pass. I am still not very good with the hights.

Ja sitten vielä pieni kallionnotkareen yli kiipeäminen ja siellä se oli. Tässä zoomin kanssa lähikuvattuna, jälkimmäisessä sitten ilman zoomia otettuna siitä kalliolta, mihin istahdettiin. Puoliso itse asiassa käveli tuonne kaaren keskelle, mutta sitä kuvaa mulla ei ole nyt tähän laitettuna. Me muut jätettiin väliin, koska näytti vähän siltä, että jos jalka alkumatkan rinteessä lipsahtaisi, voisi olla vähän kohtalokkaampi pudotus tuohon onkaloon. / And then we were there - finally. The first picture is taken with a zoom, the other gives a better idea of the area and where we decided to stay, sit and admire the scenery. We meaning my son an me. Hubby actually went there in the middle of the arch. I do have a photo of that, but not here to share with you. For me the unbalanced rocks and the possible fall to the middle was too much, so I stayed safely on my spot and just enjoyed the scenery.

Matkalla alaspäin oli jo aikaa katsella matkaseuraakin. Edelleen pitää sanoa, että oli kyllä fiksua mennä tänne heti aamulla. Kun tultiin parkkipaikalle siinä kymmenen maissa, tuli muuta porukkaa vastaan jo melkoisen reippaanlaisesti. Ainakin itsellä osan matkaa oli oikein hyvä, että oli kunnolliset kävelyyn/haikkaamiseen sopivat kengät jalassa. Siinä sitten ihmettelin näitä perheitä, joiden lapsilla oli sandaalit tai uggit, ei päähinettä, eikä mitään juotavaakaan mukana, että niinköhän mahtoivat päästä reitin perille asti.. / When coming down from the arch we had time to look closer to the company that we had there. Here is one. And I am repeating again: good choice to do this early. When we came back to the parking lot around 10 a.m., there was already a lot of people going up. I have to wonder though, there were kids and families wearing flip flops or uggs, no caps or hats and practically nothing to drink, if they ever made it to the end. I was really glad that I had some sturdy walking/hiking shoes so that I did not slip at all on the rocks. Well, maybe they were more experienced hikers.

Siinä parkkipaikan lähellä Wolfe Ranchilla on jälleen osoitus siitä, miten näitä maisemia on tallattu jo satoja satoja vuosia sitten. / Near the Wolfe Ranch and the parking lot there is a piece of centuries old history.

Tämän jälkeen päätettiin ajaa Fiery Furnace -alueen läpi ja tien loppuun Devils Gardeniin. / Then we drove the road from Fiery Furnace to the Devils Garden, where the road ends.

Devils Gardenista lähtee vähän pidempi, mutta tasainen traili. Reitti on sellainen ympyränmuotoinen ja on muistaakseni reilut 7 mailia (n. 11 km) pitkä, joten se jäi nyt tekemättä, kun aurinko porotti ihan täydeltä terältään taivaalta. Vähän alkua käveltiin ja päädyttiin sitten vain menemään hieman toiseen suuntaan Skyline Archille, jonne oli lyhyt matka. / There is a loop trail in Devils Garden, but it is appr. 7 miles long. It was too hot to do that around noon, so we skipped it, only checked a couple of arches in the beginning and walked to the Skyline Arch instead. This would be another good option to do early in the morning. I hear that it is relatively easy or moderate and not a lot of elevation. So, good to do with kids for example.

Tämä on Sand Dune Arch ja ehkä yksi mun lemppareista täällä. Valitettavasti varjojen ja valojen takia kuvassa ei näy nuo vaihtelevat punaiset ja oranssit värit niin hienosti. / The Sand Dune Arch was probably my favorite, the red and orange colors were so much better in person than in the photo.

Kummallisia kivimuodostelmia oli siellä täällä. Miten tuokin pallukka on pysynyt tuolla vuosisatoja? / There were wonderful, great and weird rocks everywhere. You kind of wait all the time that that ball shaped rock must fall soon. It didn't.

Eniten ja helpoiten näkee ehkä nämä kaaret The Windows Section -alueella, jossa on niin tuplakaaria kuin North ja South Windows -nimillä olevat kaaret (tämä ja kuvat alla). / If you just want to see some arches and do not want to hike you should drive to The Windows Section of the park. There you can see arches from the Double Arch to the North and South Windows (pictured here and below).

Poisajaessa pysähdyttiin vielä Tower of Babel eli Baabelin torni -nimisen kallion vieressä. Järjettömän iso kalliomöykky ihan keskellä tasaista maata. Alemmasta kuvasta ehkä vähän pystyy ihmisten takia hahmottamaan kokoa. Jännä miten näitä on tuonne syntynyt jotenkin ihan ei mistään. / On the way out of the park we still stopped at the Tower of Babel, that is a huge rock formation in a middle of nothing really. Below you can kind of get the idea of the greatness of this when you compare the size of the people to this.

Tämä kuva nyt periaatteessa pitäisi olla tämän setin ensimmäinen kuva, mutta on otettu kuitenkin viimeiseksi. Eli tältä näyttää alkumatka Arches-puistoon. Tie menee tosiaan mutkitellen tuossa vaalean kiven ja tumman kiven välissä. Ei mitään aitoja tai mitään. Ei kannata ehkä ajaessa kauheasti katsella alas. / This should really be the first picture, since this is the route to the park. We did it take it after successfully driving out of the park. The road goes somewhere between the lighter and darker color rock, and there are no railings on the road. So keep the eyes on the road.

Loppuiltapäivästä oli sitten aika lähteä varjoon, Moabiin syömään ja lähteä ajamaan kohti seuraavaa majoituspaikkaa, joka oli seuraavan kohteemme vieressä. Olimme varanneet majoituksen Torreysta Red Sands Hotel -nimisestä hotellista, joka oli kyllä ihan keskellä peltoa. Torrey on noin 18 kilometriä Capitol Reef -kansallispuiston länsipuolella, eli tuli matkalla siis ajettua jo kyseisen puiston läpi ja käytyä siellä illalla katseltua tähtitaivasta, mutta niistä enemmän seuraavassa postauksessa.

Then it was time for shade, food at Moab and traveling to the next destination. The destination was Capitol Reef that was on our to do list for the next day. We did actually drive through the park and had time to stop there at some places and get the park map already since we had booked a motel at Torrey on the other side of the park. We stayed at the Red Sands Hotel that was practically in the middle of nowhere, really quiet and about 12 miles from Capitol Reef National Park. So we had time to go to the park in the evening and see the beautiful night sky and the Milky Way. But more about that in the next post. This was Arches and we really really loved it.
