Seattle: Ballard district, Fremont, Gas work park

Seuraavana aamuna sitten lähdettiinkin ajelemaan takaisin kohti USA:ta. Rajan ylitys sujui jälleen suhteellisen kivuttomasti, vaikka siinä jonot toisiinsa yhdistyivätkin. Täällähän normaalisti jonojen yhdistyessä nätisti mennään vetoketjumaisesti vuorotellen, mutta toisessa jonossa ollut tyyppi ei sitä noudattanut, vaan kiilasi meidän eteen. No mitäs pienistä, varsinkin kun ottivat siinä tullipisteessä etulinjan auton sivuun ja tehotarkastukseen..

Fourth day and time to head back to the US. It was an easy ride and we did not have to wait for long. Even though there were more car lines than the booths. The lady in the second road did not want to follow the rules, one car this line one car that line, but that did not matter us. Even less when her car was ordered to go to the side and to more thorough check. Karma is a bitch..

Seattleen saavuttuamme suunnistimme Ballardin kaupunginosaan, joka on ollut kait ennen ihan oma kaupunkinsa ja jossa edelleen on hyvin omanlainen tunnelmansa. Suunnistettiin ensin Hiram M. Chittendenin kanavalle ja sen viereiseen puutarhaan. Sattumalta osuttiin taas paikalle just vähän ennen opastetun kierroksen alkamista (vinkki: kannattaa tarkistaa tiedot etukäteen, koska aina ei voi käydä hyvä tuuri). Opastetulla kierroksella kuultiin vaikka mitä tarinoita kanavan rakennusvaiheista ja nykyisyydestä. Vaikkei perheessä olisikaan mitään tekniikkanörttejä, niin on varmaan muitakin kiinnostavia juttuja. Washington ja Union järvet ovat olleet aikoinaan kaksi erillistä järveä, jotka on ruoppauksilla yhdistetty, ja kanava sitten yhdistää tämän vesialueen mereen. Tämän kanavan läpi kulkee enemmän laivaliikennettä kuin minkään toisen USA:n kanavan.

When in Seattle we headed first to the Ballard district. It used to be the city of Ballard before it became a part of Seattle. And it still has a really specific vibe to it. First we headed to the Hiram M. Chittenden locks, also known as the Ballard locks, and botanical garden. We were lucky because the guided tour was just about to start. They have 1 to 2 guided tours daily, so check the times before, because the tour is really worth the time. Even though you are not a history enthusiast, an engineer, a fish person or interested in the plants. Lake Wahington and Lake Union used to be totally separate lakes. When people settled to Seattle they discovered that there is a lot of forests. Let's make money with the logs! But first they had to build a water route. Long story short, the did some digging and connected the lakes and then needed the locks to get the route to the sea. Today it has more boat traffic than any other US lock.

Ja tietenkin kun yhdistelmänä on meri, järvi ja joet ja kanava, on siellä myös kalareitti. Kanavan toisella puolella on lohiportaat, joista kulkee alueen ylpeys, kuningaslohi, mutta toki muitakin kalalajeja. Kierroksella kerrottiin paljon lohistakin, niiden reiteistä, lisääntymisestä ym., mutta suurin osa on tainnut tässä melkein kahden kuukauden aikana jo unohtumaan.. Sen muistan, että kalojen fysiologia muuttuu, kun ne siirtyy makeasta vedestä suolaiseen veteen. Aivan uskomatonta, miten luonto keksii tällaisia.

And where there is lake and river to flow to the sea, there is fish. King salmon and other salmon and fish. And where there is a lock there are usually the fish ladders, too. And yes, you learn a lot about salmon on the tour as well. I have kind of forgotten most of it, but I was impressed to know, how they change physiologically when they go from the fresh water to the salty water. 

Sitten suunnattiin muualle Ballardiin, jossa on ihania kortteleita vähän vanhempaa rakennuskantaa ja kivoja kahviloita ym. Niin ja tietty tiukat säännöt rattijuopoille. Jos jäät kiinni, niin auto hinataan. Tai niin ainakin kyltti lupaa. 

Then we headed elsewhere in the Ballard district. Older buildings, cafes, trees etc. Do not drink and drive or your car is towed. At least the sign says so.

Sitten alkoi jo pikkuhiljaa tulla nälkäkin. Kalaravintoloita alueelta löytyy useampiakin grillikojuista lähtien. Kuulemma kaikki on hyviä, mutta Ray's on kuulemma erinomainen. Reissussa tulee usein syötyä vähän missä milloinkin, mitä nyt eteen sattuu, joten nyt päätettiin sitten valita vähän parempi paikka. Paikan illallismenu on jo selkeästi kalliimpi, mutta oltiin siellä lounas / happy hour -aikaan ja hinnat olivat oikein kohtuulliset. Ja ruoka oli hyvää, mutta niin olivat maisematkin.

And then we were really hungry. When we travel we usually eat somewhere that is just close. This time we wanted to have some fish. And in this area you definitely have a selection of fish places to go to. We asked the tour guide in the locks and she said that they are all more or less good, but Ray's is, and I quote, "whole another level of good". It is a bit pricey if you are thinking dinner, but lunch / happy hour was very reasonably priced. And I can't tell you which I enjoyed more, the food or the scenery. But I tell you this: if you are ever in the area you have to go there.

Seuraavana listalla oli Fremontin peikko, joka nyt siis on isokokoinen peikko.

Then we headed to visit the Fremont troll. It is a troll, in Fremont. It is bigger than I thought though.

Matka jatkui Gas Works Park -puistoon. Puistossa on iso, vanha ja ruostunut tehdas, jossa on tuotettu hiilestä kaasua (?). Sinänsä ihan jännä juttu, mutta puiston parasta antia on istuskella hyvin teletappimaisella kukkulalla ja ihailla kaupungin silhuettia.

Next on list, the Gas Work Park, where they have the old rusty remnants of the sole remaining coal gasification plant in the US. Quite cool, but so is the scenery. We just sat on the very teletappy hill and admired the city skyline.

Puistosta näkee järven toisella puolella olevan asuntolaiva-alueenkin. Mentiin kyllä sitten toiselle puolelle järveäkin, mutta sinne Uneton Seattlessa -elokuvan paatille ei ollut pääsyä. Kaunis alue yleisesti kyllä ja uskomaton määrä asuntolaivoja.

You can see the house boats from the Gas Work Park, too. We headed to the other side too, but unfortunately there is no public access to the Sleepless in Seattle houseboat. The area is really pretty in general though.

Seattle: Pike Place Market, kaupunki ja EMP / Pike Place Market, thecity and EMP

Toinen päivä Seattlessa kului kunnon turisteilumeininkien parissa. Ensimmäisenä suunnattiin tietenkin legendaariseen Pike Place Marketiin, josta löytyy kunnon torin tapaan melkein mitä tahansa, mutta varsinkin tuoretta kalaa (jota mainosten mukaan olisi saanut lentoyhtiöiden hyväksymään kylmälaukkupakettiin pakattuna), älyttömän halpoja leikkokukkia ja tietenkin tungokseen asti muita ihmisiä. Markettia vastapäätä on maailman ensimmäinen Starbucks, johon olisi ollut ihan tolkuton jono. Löytyihän sieltä marketista myös vähän isomman puoleinen säästöpossukin.

Our second day in Seattle was reserved for being totally touristy. So first we headed to Pike Place Market. You can totally find everything there that a good market has, and especially a lot of fresh fish, really cheap flowers, and huge crowd of other shoppers. Outside you can put the rest of your cents into the piggy bank. Opposite the market is the first Starbucks cafe. There was a huge line, so we did not go inside. Is the coffee really so much better in this store than in the dozens of other Starbucks in this city?

 

Ihan nurkan takana on paikallinen erikoisuus, purkkakuja, johon kuka tahansa voi jättää omat purkkansa. Siellä ne on nyt meidänkin vähän pureskellut Jenkki-purkat. 

Right next to the Pike Place Market is the Gum Wall. Or actually already several walls with old bubble gum. Yes, really! A place to leave your mark to the city. It is actually cooler than what it sounds..

  

Päätettiin ostaa Seattlen City Pass, sillä oltiin suunniteltu menevämme suurimpaan osaan sillä päästäviin nähtävyyksiin joka tapauksessa ja Seattlessa osaavat todellakin kiskoa aikamoista hintaa noista yksittäisistä lipuista. Ensimmäiseksi suunnattiin sitten risteilylle, koska se ranta ja laivalaituri on siinä lähes suoraan tuosta Pike Place Marketilta alaspäin, siinä mäen alla. Risteilyn alkaessa oli sellainen tyypillinen Seattlen ilma, eli pilvinen, mutta risteilyn aikana taivas selkeni melkoisesti. Näillä opastetuilla reissuilla on aina parasta kuunnella asiantuntevaa opasta. Opittiin kaupungista melkoisesti, esimerkiksi tuossa laatikkomaisessa talossa on aikoinaan majoittunut myös Beatles. Kukaan muu ei kuulemma suostunut bändiä majoittamaan, sillä bändiä seurasi aina kirkuva fanijoukko. The Edgewater hotelli piti Beatlesin majoittamista aikoinaan hyvänä PR-temppuna, ja sellainen se todellakin oli. Ikoninen kuva bändistä kalastamassa hotellin ikkunasta on kuvattu juurikin täällä.

Since we were going to be real tourists and visit every major tourist attraction is the city we decided to buy the Seattle City Pass, that lowers the high ticket prices to a more tolerable level. So we headed down the hill from Pike Place Market and went for a short cruise in the bay. The day started with a "typical Seattle weather", heavily cloudy. But the sky cleared up while the cruise continued. I love good tour guides and the boat really had one. We learned so much from the city and it's landmarks. The hotel in the first picture below had some famous guest in 1964, when the Beatles visited the town. Since they were always followed with screaming fans no hotel wanted to take them. But The Edgewater thought that this would be a good PR stunt and offered a suite for them. Yes, this is the place where the picture with Beatles fishing from the hotel room window was taken! 

Mentiin sitten siinä vieressä olevaan akvaarioonkin, kun sillä lipulla sinne pääsi. En sano enempää kuin, että on sitä paljon paremmissakin akvaarioissa tullut käytyä. Joten eikun toiselle puolelle kaupunkia ja EMP-museoon (Experience Museum Project Museum). Siellä oli vielä Star Wars -pukuja esittelevä erityisnäyttely (josta toki piti maksaa jotain ylimääräistä), joten eikun ensin sinne.

We did visit the aquarium since it is included in the City pass. I'm just saying that I have seen better aquariums before, and if you have time to find a real restaurant/cafe, you should do so... It was not bad, but not especially great either. So next we headed to EMP Museum (Experience Museum Project Museum). They still had the Star Wars costumes exhibition, and we really really wanted to see that even though we had to pay extra for that.

Itse EMP-museon osiot keskittyy musiikkiin ja populaarikultuuriin ja on todellakin käymisen arvoinen paikka. Varsinkin jos sattuu pitämään Seattelen omista ylpeyksistä.

The other parts of the EMP concentrate on music and popular culture and is really a must visit to music lovers. Especially the ones that love the boys from Seattle.

Museosta löytyy tietenkin kokonainen Jimi Hendrixille omistettu huone miehen tavaroineen. 

Of course there is a whole room dedicated to Jimi Hendrix and his things and career.

Ja tietenkin oma huone myös Nirvanalle ja Kurt Cobainille.

Recognize the cardigan? Of course there is a room for Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. 

Museossa pääsee itsekin kokeilemaan ja musisoimaan. Alakerta on puolestaan omistettu erilaiselle elokuvatavaralle.

You can actually try recoding and learn drum beats in the museum. But one part is dedicated to all my favorite movies. ;)

Tässä vielä EMP-museo ulkoapäin. Vaikkapa on aivan Space Needlen vieressä, sinne ei menty tuona päivänä. Yritettiin kyllä, mutta se oli iltapäivän suljettu jonkun yksityistilaisuuden vuoksi. Viikon vinkki: katso aukioloajat Space Needlen omilta sivuilta etukäteen haluamallesi päivälle, koska tällaisia yksityistilaisuuksia on kuulemma aina "silloin tällöin". 

The EMP Museum on the left. Even though it is right next to the Space Needle, we did not go there that day since it was closed for a private event for the whole afternoon. If you are planning on visiting the Space Needle, you might want to check their web page before going just to check that it is actually open when you are planning on going there..

Päivän päätteeksi ajettiin vielä Kerry Park -puistoon Queen Anne kukkulalle, josta on hieno näkymä kaupungin silhouettiin ja Elliot bay -lahteen. Tällä kyseiselle kukkulalla asuvat myös kuvitteelliset lääkärit, kuten Dr Frasier Crane ja Dr Meredith Grey. Jos maisemat näyttävät siis jotenkin kumman tutuilta, niin saattavat olla tv:stä tuttuja.

To finish the day we drove to Queen Anne Hill and visited the small Kerry Park. The view is just amazing, you can see both the city silhouette and the Elliott bay from here. No wonder some famous tv-doctors like Dr Frasier Crane and Dr Meredith Grey live here in this relatively expensive area.
