Maahan saapuminen / Arrival

Tavarat muuttokuormassa lähteneenä ja laukut pakattuina lähdimme matkaan eilen aamulla Lontoon kautta. Yleensä olemme pyrkineet pakkaamaan suhteellisen kevyesti, vain pakolliset tavarat mukaan. Ongelma pakkauksessa olikin, että mitä tulisi pakata mukaan heti ja mitkä voivat mennä muuttokuormaan, joka saapuu n. 6-8 viikkoa meidän jälkeemme. Lopputulos oli, että kolmihenkinen perheemme lähti reissuun mukanaan 3 kpl matkalaukkuja á 19-21 kg, kolme käsimatkatavaraa, 1 läppärilaukku, 1 käsilaukkku ja 1 viulu koteloineen. Etukäteen olin yrittänyt selvittää, että voiko viulun tosiaan ottaa mukaan käsimatkatavarana, sillä kotelo ei todellakaan täytä käsimatkatavaralle asetettuja kokorajoituksia, vaan on huomattavasti pidempi. Lentoyhtiöiden sivuilla kun joissain kerrotaan, että pienen soittimen voi ottaa mukaan matkustamoon, mutta viulu ei yksinkertaisesti kestä matkatavararuuman lämpötilavaihteluita, joten se on pakko ottaa matkustamoon. Olin löytänyt tiedon, että soittimen joutuu todennäköisesti aina ottamaan pois turvatarkastuksissa, jotta voidaan tarkistaa laukun ja viulun sisältö. Yllätykseksemme ei viulun kanssa tullut mitään säätöä, kukaan ei missään vaiheessa valittanut kotelon kokoa, eikä koteloa tarvinnut edes avata missään vaiheessa. Vaikka yli 80 kg matkatavaroiden raahaaminen ei ihan kevyttä olekaan, meni matka ongelmitta ja laukutkin olivat Lontoossa ehtineet jatkolennolle.

Olimme saaneet vinkin, että konsulaatista tulleet keltaiset kirjekuoret (jotka siis pitivät olla avaamattomat) on syytä ottaa laukusta esille mahdollisimman pian koneesta ulostulon jälkeen. Tullessamme maahantulojonoon ystävällinen virkailija bongasikin kuoremme heti ja ohjasi meidän "New Immigrants" eli uusien maahanmuuttajien jonoon. Jono oli huomattavasti lyhyempi kuin normaalit vierailijoiden jonot, mutta käsittely kesti vähän kauemmin. Taas internetin tietojen mukaan käsittely rajalla voi kestää n. tunnin sisältäen haastattelun, mutta tiedot eivät ainakaan meidän kohdallamme pitäneet paikkansa. Käsittelyssä kesti jonkun verran kauemmin, sillä perusmaahantulomuodollisuuksien eli sormenjälkien ja valokuvanoton (meiltä aikuisilta) lisäksi piti vielä allekirjoitella paperi ja maahantulovirkailija aukoi keltaiset kuoremme, käsitteli kunkin henkilön kerrallaan ja leimasi passiimme leiman. Leima + viisumi toimivat oleskelulupanamme kunnes ne viralliset kortit, ns. green cardit tulevat postitse. Tuolla väliaikaisella leimalla ja viisumilla voimme sitten anoa sosiaaliturvatunnusta ja mennä suorittamaan kalifornialaista ajokorttia. Maahantulohaastattelua ei ollut. Virkailija totesi kysyvästi, että voitimme siis lotossa ja huomautti, että olemme onnekkaita (niin ollaankin!). Lopuksi tuli vain onnentoivotukset, että olemme nyt siis pysyvän oleskeluluvan omaavia ja hyvää jatkoa USA:ssa.

P.S. Hotelliin saavuttuamme puoliso haki take-out päivällisen läheisestä kiinalaisesta. Onnenkeksin ennustus tuli toivottavasti vain vähän myöhässä: "An airplane ride is soon in your future sending you to fun!"

Our stuff was packed in Tuesday and we took off Thursday morning. During the last week we had packed our luggage and wondering what to pack with us and what should go to the moving container. The moving container is going to arrive in 6-8 weeks, so everything important should go to the luggage. We usually pack quite lightly, but this time it could not be the case. We ended up with 3 luggages (19 to 21 kg a piece = 42 to 46 pounds), 3 hand luggages, one laptop bag, one hadbag and one violin in it's case. I had tried to find out how you should take a violin to the aircraft. Some companies does say that you can take a small instrument with you. The problem was the violin case is not so small and it is bigger than the allowed handluggage size. But you have to take the violin to the cabin, since it does not stand the drastic change of temperature that is in the luggage compartment in the plane. Luckily no one commented about the size and we did not even have to open the case in the security chekcs and show that there weren't anything extra in it.  So, in total we had appr. 80 kg (176 lbs) with us and everything went suprisingly well. The luggages did make it to the flight from London even though there was not a lot of time changing planes. So we arrived with everything.

We had gotten a tip that the yellow envelopes that we had gotten from the consulate should be taken out of the bags as soon as possible when you step out of the plane. That was a good advice since a nice airport officer spotted us the minute we arrived to the hall where they have the entry inspection (or whatever it is called) and guided us to the "New immigrants" line. The line was way shorter than the Visitor lines, but it took a little longer to wait for your turn. We had found some info (again from the Internet) that it would take appr. an hour to process the papers and that there would be an entry interview. Well, there weren't. The fingerprints and picture was taken from the adults as from any visitor arriving to USA. Then we had to sign a paper and the officer took one person's papers from the yellow envelopes at a time and processed those. Finally he stamped our passports. The stamp and the visa are the temporary residence permit. The actual Green Card should be mailed to us in 1-6 months. With the stam and visa we can apply for the social security number and get a driving license after completing the tests at the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The officer did not interview us. The only thing he asked was "You guys won the lottery then?" We answered yes and he told us that "You guys were really lucky." (Yes, we know.) When everything was okay he told us that we were now permanent residents, congratulated us and wished us welcomed to US.

P.S. When we arrived to the hotel, hubby went to pick up some take-out chinese. The fortune cookie was hopefully just a bit late, since it said: "An airplane ride is soon in your future sending you to fun!"

Viimeistelyä / Final stuff before moving

Kaapit tyhjenee pikkuhiljaa ylimääräisestä roinasta ja byrokratian kiemuroita hoidellaan myös. Muuttoilmoituksia, kännykkäliittymän sulkemista jne. on ollut ohjelmassa, vaikka suurin osa ajasta onkin mennyt ystävien tapaamiseen ja tavarasta eroon hankkiutumiseen. Täytyy kyllä sanoa, että vaikka sosiaalinen verkostomme ei ehkä olekaan kaikkein laajin, on ystävä- ja tuttavapiirimme kyllä ihan huipputyyppejä. Ikävä toki tulee, mutta onhan kaikkia eri välineitä, joiden avulla voi pitää yhteyttä.

Ystävät ovat sekä itse ostaneet meidän tavaroitamme (mm. elektroniikkaa, joka ei toimi USA:n jännitteellä), myös löytäneet tuttavapiiristään ostajia esim. huonekaluille, joita emme ota mukaan. Ihanat ystävämme ovat myös mm. auttaneet työnhaussa, antaneet tietoja kohteesta, lupautuneet lainaamaan pesukonettaan (omamme jo myytiin), luvanneet lainata pakettiautoa, peräkärryä ja aikaansa asunnon siistimiseen ja tyhjentämiseen ja tarjonneet jopa kyytiä lentokentälle. Ihan kaikkia palveluksia emme tarvitse ja tule lunastamaan, mutta ihan huippua, että ovat olleet mukana tukemassa meitä tällä matkalla. Nimiä en julkisesti luettele, itse tiedätte, keitä te olette, mutta iso Kiitos teille kaikille!

The date of the move is approaching and we are busy getting rid of extra stuff and electrical devices that cannot be used in US. We have also filled forms, informed about the move and closed one mobile phone etc. We have also tried to meet our friends and family. We do not  have the largest social network, but our friends are top A class. I will miss them a lot.

Our friends have helped us in selling our stuff. If they have not bought stuff themselves they have found someone they know instead. They have helped us enormously. Our cool friends have helped us in job hunting, getting information about the Silicon Valley area, they have promised to loan their vans and time in order to help us clean and empty our house. I could also go wash our laundry (since we already sold our washing machine) to a friend's house and could get a transportation to the airport. Is this cool or what? (Yes, it is!)

Varasuunnitelma / Back-up plan

Kun tämä asia nyt näyttää joidenkin tahoilta tulevan esille ja joitain huolestuttavan, niin raapustanpahan tämän nyt tähän vielä julkisesti. Kun meillä kerran ei ole sitä asuntoa ja työpaikkaa ja maakin outo jaa-jaa-jaa-jaa jne. Olemme kyllä tämän muuttoprosessin kanssa jalat maassa (ja pää pilvissä) ja kaikki päätökset on tehty pitkän harkinnan ja selvittelyn jälkeen. Ja kun puoliso on tämän prosessin hieman eri mallisena kerran aiemmin käynyt läpi ja olen jo yhteyksissä FB:n kautta alueen suomalaisiin, niin kyllä tässä aika hyvin tiedetään, mitä edessä on. Ja ollaan myös varauduttu siihen, ettei kaikki mene ihan niinkuin elokuvissa (enkä tarkoita nyt sitä Green Card elokuvaa, koska siinähän ei kaikki sen oleskelun kanssa mennyt putkeen..).

Asuntoasia tulikin jo aiemmin täällä blogissa käsiteltyä, mutta joku asunto aina löytyy. Jos ei näistä haluamistamme, niin sitten selvittelemme muiden koulujen alueilta. Ei siinä sen kummempaa ole. Puoliskon työnhaku on sujunut täältä käsin muuten ihan positiivisesti, mutta prosessin jossain vaiheessa ongelmaksi tulee se, että emme ole jo paikan päällä. IT-alalla kuitenkin vaikuttaa alueella töitä olevan, vaikka toki hakijoitakin riittää, mutta myös jonkunasteista työvoimapulaakin alueella on jo ajoittain lehtikirjoitteluissa väläytelty. Joten melkoisen suuri luottamus on siihen, että niitä töitä löytyy tietyn aikarajan sisällä. Ja jos ei löydy, niin meillä on varattuna myös paluuliput Suomeen. Tämä on tehty oikeastaan ihan taloudellisistakin syistä, sillä meno-paluu lipun hinta on jostain kumman syystä 1/4 pelkän menolipun hinnasta. Jos homma tökkii, kaikki menee pieleen, eikä töitäkään löydy, niin sitten käytämme paluuliput tai ostamme uudet jollekin toiselle ajalle. Vaikka tämä ei nyt tässä tapauksessa todellakaan ole meidän toiveissamme, niin eipä siinä sen kummempaa. Tarkoitus on jättää suomen tileille hätävara, jolla tällaiset asiat saa sitten hoidettua. Homma on siis oikeasti hyvissä käsissä.
Tästä tulee joko pitkä loma aurinkoisessa Kaliforniassa tai sitten alku uusille mahdollisuuksille ja siirtolaiselämälle. Aika näyttää, että kumpi tästä tulee. Kokemuksia tulee elämän reppuun kummassakin tapauksessa toivottavasti paljon.

Some people are still worried that have we really figured everything out and are we really going to move without an apartment and a job to a foreign country. Yes we are, but we are not doing this with our eyes closed and we consider ourselves very informed about a lot of things. By far, we have not made any decisions lightly, even though it may seem like that when reading my posts. My husband has already done this kind of move once before and we are already in contact with other Finnish people in the area via Facebook. So we have figured quite well out the important stuff that we have to think about. And we do not look this moving process throug pink glasses and think that everything is going 100% as planned. It never does.
I already wrote about our aparment plans yesterday. If those aparments do not suit us, then we'll figure out something else and consider anothen school district area too. My husband has been looking for a job and it has been well until they have to make a decision and then the problem is that he does not already live in the area. It seems that there are a lot of vacansies in the IT industry (unlike Finland's situation at the moment). Of course there are also a lot of applicant, but we are fully confident that a good person will get a job over there. And by reading the news you get the impression that there are actually more open positions than applicants. If he does not find a job we have our return tickets that we can use. The return tickets were actually a 1/4 of the price of a oneway ticket, so it was economically sensible to buy these, even if we do not actually intend to use them. If we have to use them, then we will.
We are heading either for a long vacation in California (not bad) or starting a new, exciting life as legal aliens (not bad either). Only time will tell. We would not be sorry, if this would return to just a long vacation. But we would definitely be sorry later, if we did not seize this opportunity that we have in our hands now.
