Road trip: Yellowstone NP, vol. 1

Seuraavaksi ajoimme kohti Yellowstone National Parkia, jossa olimme lauantaina siinä puolen päivän tienoilla. Jos aikoo mennä Yellowstoneen, eikä aio telttailla itse puistossa, niin varsinkin kesällä majoitusten kanssa kannattaa olla ajoissa. Me siis tehtiin päätös tehdä tämä reissu noin kuukausi ennen reissua ja majoitustilanne ei ollut mikään maailman parhain. Puiston sisällä on kaksi aluetta, joissa on hotelleja/motelleja, mutta niiden hinnat olivat tuolloin ihan pilvissä (tarkoittaen tässä tapauksessa 300-600 $/yö). Onnistuimme varaamaan kaksi yötä sitten aivan puiston ulkopuolella olevasta Gardinerin kylästä, mutta niin, että jouduimme vaihtamaan majoitusta siinä välissä. Eli vain yö/majapaikka, mutta olihan sekin jotain. Koska olimme puistossa kolmena päivänä, pitkiä päiviä, päätin nyt laittaa nämä kuvatkin sitten kolmeen eri postaukseen.

Next we drove to Yellowstone National Park and were there around noon. We spent time there on 3 separate days. Long days. So I am also gonna blog about the park in three separate postings. If you are ever planning to go to Yellowstone, you might want to plan it early. Since we made the decision to do this road trip about a month before travelling, the area was already pretty fully booked. You can, of course, stay at the camping grounds in the park (we did not plan to do that, since we were on a road trip and could only fit 1 luggage/per each to the car, and would have had to pay extra for extra luggages for the flight, too). There are two areas in the park where they have hotels/motels, but the prices were already pretty high (I am talking $300-600 range here). We managed to find something at Gardiner, that is right outside of the park (north), but did not find anything for 2 consecutive nights, so we had to stay at two different places. But it was so worth it.

Pysähdyimme Albright Visitor Centerin lähelle parkkipaikalle puistossa olevien majoitusten viereen. Ja hetihän siinä sitten varoiteltiin paikallisesta eläimistöstä, eikä suotta. / We stopped at Albright Visitor Center and were greeted by this elk. By the way in this area you have some of the hotels in this area. So these elks are just walking and lying between the buildings, along the road. Nice.

Päätettiin ensimmäisenä päivänä ajaa kohti Lamar Valleytä eli kohti koillista sisäänkäyntiä, koska siellä voi kuulemma nähdä todennäköisemmin eläimiä. Tämä reitti kulkee ensin vuorenrinnettä ylöspäin ja laskeutuu sitten alemmas laaksoon (joka toki sekin taitaa olla noin 2 km merenpinnasta). / We decided to head towards Lamar Valley and the Northeast Entrance first, since we had read that this is probably the best place to spot some wild life. The route goes up the mountain first before descending to the valley (I guess the valley itself is at 5000-6000 feet from sea level, but here it is a valley).

Eikä kauaakaan, kun bongattiin pellolta näitä hanka-antilooppeja, joita näimme aiemmin Utah'n reissullamme. Huomautuksena tässä vaiheessa, Yellowstonen ohjeissa sanotaan, että eläimistä pitäisi pysyä vähintään 25 yardin (n. 23 metriä) päässä, ja karhuista ja susista vähintään 100 yardin (n. 91,5 metriä) päässä, sillä varsinkin jälkimmäiset ja biisonit ovat arvaamattomia. Näin onkin tehty, eli näissä kuvissa on käytetty kuvattaessa yleisesti zoomia, ja sitten osaa olen vielä rajannut tietokoneella. Ainoat kuvat, jotka on otettu lähempää, on yleensä otettu autosta, jossa ei ole yksinkertaisesti voinut tehdä mitään, jos joku eläin on päättänyt lähteä kävelemään auton edestä. / We did not drive far when we saw the first pronghorn on the field. Note! In Yellowstone you should keep at least 25 yard distance to the wild animals, 100 yards to bears and wolves. I pretty much always did that here. I have used the zoom when taking pictures and some of the pictures are also cropped later on the computer. There are some occasions that we were closer to the bisons, since they were next to the road or on the road, and there was not much we could do then.

Maisemat olivat uskomattoman upeita ja kaikki oli yllättävän vihreää. Seuraavat kuvat kertovat tarkemmin noista ruskeista ja mustista möykyistä tuolla kuvassa. Ensimmäisen biisonin nähdessämme oltiin ihan, että "jee, täällä näkyy kanssa näitä". Mitä pidemmälle sitä ajeli, niin ajatus oli enemmänkin, että "kuinka paljon näitä täällä oikein voi olla?". Vastaushan tuohon kysymykseen on, että Yellowstonessa on koko maan suurin vapaana liikkuva biisonipopulaatio, joka koostuu kahdesta laumasta. Määrä vaihtelee noin 2500-5000 biisonin välillä. Eli seuraavissa kuvissa saattaa olla vähän biisoneita. / The scenery was so great, and green! Then we saw some bronw/black spots in the field. "Yay, bisons!", we thought. A couple of minutes later it was more like "OMG. How many bisons there are here, really?". The answer to that is: it depends, but there are two herds here, the population is 2500-5000 bisons. These herds are the biggest wild bison herds in the country. What can I say? Wow!

Näitä poikasia tai vasikoita näkyi myös siellä täällä. / A nursing mother. There were a lot of these young ones too.

Näin luonto mukautuu ihmisen kädenjälkiinkin. Vessan seinässä oli toistakymmentä pesää ja asukkaat kurkkivat pesistään vuorotellen. / We stopped at the restroom. Well it was a man made restroom, but the bird had found other use for the outsides. There were a huge row of these nests there.

Lisää maisemia. / Did I already say, that it was so beautiful out there. Well, it surely was.

Päätimme pikaisesti kiepata katsomassa myös Tower Fall -putouksen, jossa putouksen yläosassa on tuollaisia erikoisia teräviä huippuja. / We decided to stop at the Tower Falls quickly. I am repeating myself here, but how beautiful can it be. You look at one direction and it looks totally different than in the other direction.

Ja se pakollinen maaorava-bongauskin suoritettu. / And of course there were chipmunks there, too.

Melko lähellä on myös yksi tällainen kivettynyt puu, joka on siis vuosien ja olosuhteiden saatossa muuttunut kivimäiseksi. / Pretty close from the Tower Falls you can find a petrified tree, that looks more like a rock now than a tree.

Siinä melko lähellä sitä pohjoisen puolen vierailijakeskusta, eli Visitor Centreä, oli yksi mun suosikkipaikoista, eli Mammoth Hot Springs. Tähän kun tuli, niin sai hetken ihmetellä, että hetkinen tulinko mä nyt jollekin toiselle planeetalle. Kuumaa höyryä, mineraaleja ja bakteereita sopivassa suhteessa ja lopputulos on näin upea. / Near the Albright Visitor Center there is the Mammoth Hot Springs. This was one of my favorite places in the park. When you have hot water, steam, minerals and some bacteria, it results to this. This looks totally like it would be out of this world.

Ja koska niitä kanadanhirviä oli kokoontunut siihen puistossa olevien hotellien ja muiden rakennusten viereen vaikka kuinka paljon, piti se kamera kaivaa esiin vielä kerran. / And since there were at least a dozen elks near the visitor center and the other buildings, I had to take the camera one more time. I mean really, these were right next to the road and the parking lot, how amazing is that. (Hint, I think it is so amazing, if you did not figure that out yet..)

Mahat alkoi jo kurnia ja kellokin näytti melkein kahdeksaa, eli ajeltiin sitten Gardineriin, haettiin pizzat ja sitten suihkuun ja nukkumaan. / It was already almost 8 pm. We were hungry and tired, so it was time to buy some pizzas, head to the hotel and go to sleep. Early wake up next morning for another great day in Yellowstone. Gosh, I love this place.

P.S. Lamar Valley on myös se paikka, jossa todennäköisemmin voi nähdä susia. Mutta niitä varten pitää olla paikalla aamuhämärissä siinä neljän tai viiden pintaan kesällä ja tietää oikea paikka, joten jätettiin tällä reissulla väliin. 

P.S. If you want to see wolves, Lamar Valley is the place to be here. But I was told that you have to be early and know where to go. And I mean 4 am to 5 am early. We did not do that, but that would have been so cool. Of course no guarantee of seeing the wolves, but after many many years there are wolves again in Yellowstone.
