Road trip: Yellowstone NP, vol 3

Seuraavana aamuna oli jälleen aikainen herätys, sillä edelliseltä päivältä oli jäänyt vielä vaikka kuinka paljon nähtävää. Nyt oli siis vaan päätettävä, että mitä haluaisimme ehdottomasti nähdä ja tehdä. Varmaanhan jo tässä vaiheessa oli, että haluaisimme tulla joskus tänne takaisin ja mennä enemmän pois tuolta tien vierestä ja vaeltelemaan. Tällä kertaa ei oikein aika ja muutkaan varustelutasot antaneet kunnon vaelluksille mahdollisuuksia. Suosituksenahan tuolla on, että jos kulkee muualla kuin noilla yleisimmillä reiteillä, olisi syytä pitää aina mukanaan sellaista karhusuihketta. Karhusuihke on kuulemma jotain pippurisuihketta tms., joka on kait todettu suhteellisen toimivaksi, mutta ei kuitenkaan karhuille vaaralliseksi. Näitä suihkeita voi joko ostaa tai vuokrata (noin 50 dollaria/suihke), mutta niitä ei tosiaan sitten saa ottaa lentokoneeseen mukaan. Harmaakarhuja Yellowstonessa on vähän alta tuhat ja mustakarhuja ilmeisesti hieman enemmän. Harvemmin karhut nykyään ihmisten kimppuun hyökkäävät, mutta silti suosituksena on, että hiljaisemmille reiteille lähdetään vähintään kolmen hengen porukassa ja karhusuihkeella varustettuna. Suosituksena on myös puhua tai lauleskella, jotta karhut kuulevat ihmiset, eivätkä tule vahingossa reitille. Mikä osa tästä taas on amerikkalaista liioittelua, sitä en osaa sanoa.

Next morning we got up early again, since we had still a lot to see. There would be so much to see here, but you just have to pick what places to see and what not. It was pretty clear that we wanted to come here again some day and maybe do some hiking. This time we did not have the time and gear for it. They recommend that you buy or rent a bear spray, if you go to the hiking trails. The recommendation was: hike with at least 2 other people, carry the bear spray and talk/sing while hiking, so that the bears can hear you. There is approximately one serious injury per year caused by a bear (compared to 4 million visitors per year), but you might want to be prepared at some level still. At least when camping, have all the food items and toothpastes etc. in a bear proof container outside your tent. There is around thousand grizzly bears in the area and probably a bit bigger black bear population there, so there are plenty of bears there again. So cool.

Kuten aiemmin tuli todettua, yritettiin aina pysytellä sen n. 25 metrin päässä biisoneista, mutta entäs jos yksi on päättänyt majoittua WC:tten viereen, niin mitäs sitten tehdään? / We usually kept our 25 yard distance to the bisons. But what can you do if one of them had decided to stay right next to the restrooms? At least the doors were on the other side of the building.

Aamun ohjelmassa oli Canyon Village ja pienet patikoinnit alas Upper Falls -vesiputoukselle. Paikka oli todellakin upeampi kuin kuvista voisi kuvitella ja veden pauhu melkoinen. Matkahan tuonne putoukselle ei ole mikään hillittömän pitkä ja alamäkeä, mutta ylöskiipeäminen kestääkin sitten jonkun verran kauemmin.. / We wanted to go to small hikes/walks, so we headed to the Canyon Village and to the Upper Falls. There is a path down to the falls and it sure is worth visiting. Getting up again might take a while, so plan accordingly.

Inspiration Point, josta näkymä Yellowstone Riverille ja putouksille. En tiedä, voiko paljon upeampaa paikkaa olla. Luonnossa paljon upeampi kuin kuvassa. / The Inspiration Point is surely worth visiting. You can see the Yellowstone River with the falls. It surely was breathtaking and looked even greater in person.

Mainitsin edellisessä postauksessa, että matkan kesto riippuu tiellä olevista biisoneista. No nämä päättivät ylittää tien ihan joukolla. Seistiin lähes paikallamme varmaan 15 minuuttia. Meidän edellä oleva auto pääsi eteenpäin ja sitten sieltä päätti taas yksi seurue ylittää tietä. Pitkään näytti siltä, että tulevat suoraan päin autoa, mutta tekivät väistöliikkeen ja ohittivat auton noin 15 sentin päästä. Huh. / I did mention that the time used for the loop road depens on how many bisons there are on the road, right? Well, we stayed here about 15 minutes. But what can you do? It seemed that the whole herd wanted to go to the other side of the road at the same time. The car before us managed to leave, so after that we were the first in line. And there were several bisons coming right towards us. And I mean right towards use. Half a foot before the car they turned and passed the car and continued their journey. I pretty much was ready to freak out for a second there.

Mud Volcano, eli mutakuoppa, jossa erilaista tuliperäistä toimintaa. / Mud Volcano, that was pretty much what the name says.

Ja tämä yksilö oli myös päättänyt parkkeerata tuolla Mud Volcano -alueella aivan siihen polun viereen. Onneksi siihen oli rakennettu puiset aidat, sillä välimatka ei todellakaan ollut 25 metriä. / And another one that was not 25 yards away, since he was right next to the boardwalk that was around the Mud Volcano area.

Mud Volcano -alueella oleva Dragon's Mouth -nimellä kutsuttu alue, joka on saanut nimensä siitä, että sieltä tulee ulos höyryä jatkuvasti ja se kuulostaa siltä, kuin joku lohikäärme puhkuisi sitä höyryä pois sieltä. / Dragon's Mouth at Mud Volcano area. The picture really does not tell all. When the steam comes out, you can hear a noise that sounds like someone would be puffing it out. Hence the name Dragon's Mouth. The kids there seem to be very excited about this.

Pysähdyttiin Old Faithfulin nurkilla jälleen syömässä ja parkkiksella oli tällainen. / We stopped at the Old Faithful to get something to eat. This was there on the parking lot.

Midway Geyser Basin. Tänne oli jälleen hillittömän pitkä autojono, sillä alueen parkkipaikka on suhteellisen pieni. Mutta tätä en todellakaan olisi halunnut jättää väliin. Nämä värit on kerrassaan upeita. Alueella menee myös pieni vaellusreitti, jonne haluan kyllä joskus vielä mennä. Olen nähnyt kuvia, miltä tämä paikka näyttää rinteeltä tai ilmasta käsin, ja jos mahdollista, niin sieltä käsin se näyttää vieläkin upeammalta. / We could not have left without visiting the Midway Geyser Basin. Again there was a long line of cars waiting for a parking space. That parking lot is really not that big. But it was so worth the wait. Look at these colors. Apparently there is a hiking trail near here that goes up the hill and the view is just amazing. I so want to do that sometime in the future.

Sitten olikin aika jättää Yellowstone. Seuraavaksi listalla oli Grand Tetonin kansallispuisto, mutta koska majoitusta oli hieman haasteellista löytää ja kun kerran road tripillä oltiin, niin me suunnattiin aavistuksen väärään suuntaan eli Idahoon. Tulipahan samalla piipahdettua sitten siellä perunoistaan tunnetussa osavaltiossakin.

It was time to leave Yellowstone. We were heading to the Grand Teton National Park, but we had trouble booking a hotel/motel from the area, so we had decided to make and extra detour and drive to Idaho and stay there. After all this was a road trip and we were so close to Idaho anyway, so we decided to do that.
