Road trip: Yellowstone NP, vol. 2

Seuraavana päivänä lähdettiin aamulla aikaisin ennen kahdeksaa ajamaan takaisin kohtia puistoa, jotta ainakin hetki ehdittäisiin ajella ennen suurempia ruuhkia. Suunnitelmissa oli ajaa Yellostonen sisällä menevä loop road, eli jonkunasteisen ympyrän puistossa tekevä reitti. Sen pituus on 142 mailia (228 km) ja ajomatkaan kuluva aika riippuu siitä paljonko muita autoja sattuu olemaan, kuinka usein reitillä pysähtyy ja sitten kuinka kauan joutuu odottelemaan tietä ylittäviä biisoneita (ja ei, tämä ei ollut vitsi..). Sellainen 12 tuntia saatiin helposti aikaa kulumaan, sitten oli ihan pakko luovuttaa, vaikka nähtävää ja kuvattavaa olisikin ollut vielä vaikka kuinka.

The next day we left the hotel around 8 am to head early to the park and avoid the crowd. We had planned to drive the Yellowstone Grand Loop Road that day. The road is 142 miles and you can spend any number of hours on that. Mainly because there might be a lot of other visitors and traffic, because you make multiple stops along it and because you have to wait for the bisons that are passing the road (and I am not kidding about that).

Lähdettiin kiertämään tuota tietä lännen puolelta eli kohti Norrisia, Madisonia ja Old Faithfulia. Ensimmäisenä pysähdyspaikkana Swan Lake (joutsenlampi), joka oli ainakin siihen aikaan aamulla kuin rauhallisuuden ja tyyneyden perikuva. / We headed to the park and selected the road on the west side, so we headed towards Norris, Madison and Old Faithful. First stop was at Swan Lake. In the morning this was so quiet, only some wildlife and us.

Maisemia ihastellessa alkoi jalkojen vieressä kuulua rapinaa. Nyt en googlauksesta huolimatta ole täysin varma nimestä, mutta suomenkielinen nimi lienee ylänkösiiseli. Oravannäköisiä, mutta ilman oravannäköistä häntään. Juoksentelivat siinä ympäriinsä ja kurkkivat koloistaan. / While standing there I heard some noise and looked down. There were these uinta ground squirrels running and peaking from their holes. You can see a lot of these running across the roads too (and getting killed when cars hit them).

Huono kuva, mutta toisella puolella peltoa heinikko vaan rapisi, kun amerikanmäyräperhe oli matkalla johonkin. / On the other side of the road there was something moving too, a badger family.

Seuraava pysähdyspaikka, Roaring Mountain, jossa ympäri kalliorinnettä tulee ulos höyryä, siitä siis tuo nimikin. / Next stop Roaring Mountain. What I loved about Yellowstone is that first you have nice scenery, green mountains and prairie like wide spaces and wildlife, and then suddenly you have these volcano types of areas.

Seuraavaksi Norris Geyser Basin, jossa on enemmänkin näitä erikoisenvärisiä vesilampia ja höyryä tulee sieltä ja täältä. Alue onkin yksi puiston kuumimmista ja vanhimmista vulkaanisista alueista. Kuuman vesihöyryn ja muutenkin hyvin haavoittuvaisen maaston vuoksi näissä paikoissa pitää kulkea merkittyjä polkuja pitkin. Tai oikeammin rakennettuja polkuja, eli alueita kietää tuollaiset puusta tehdyt rakenteet. / Next stop was Norris Geyser Basin, that is one of the hottest and oldest thermal areas in the park. That is why you have to stay on the boardwalk when you go around it. It has really hot spots, but it is also a very delicate area, that does not need humans stepping on it and ruining the surface and the bacteria that gives the water their weird colors.

Kyseisellä alueella on myös Steamboat Geyser, joka on maailman korkein edelleen aktiivinen geyris. Ongelmana vaan on, että se saattaa purkautua muutamien päivien välein tai välissä voi olla vuosiakin, joten sitä jopa 90-metristä suihkua on tässä turha kovin kauaa odotella. / In the Norris area there is also the Steamboat Geyser, that is the tallest geyser that is still active. There are smaller burst of water every now and then, but for the 300 feet eruption you might need to wait for 24 hours or 40 years, so maybe not worth the wait though.

Nyt en ole ihan täysin varma kuvista, mutta pysähdyimme sekä Gibbon Falls- että Firehole Falls -putouksille. Muistini mukaan kuvissa ovat nyt molemmat putoukset, mutta ihan varmaksi en voi sanoa. / Then we stopped at the Gibbon Falls and the Firehole Falls. I am not quite sure, if these pictures are one from each, since some time has already passed.

Seuraava pysähdyspaikka oli Lower Geyser Basin. Jännä miten joissain kohdin luonto ja nämä vulkaaniset alueet ovat ihan täydessä sovussa keskenään, joissain toisissa taas näkyy vain kuivia/palaneita puunrunkoja kuumien höyrysuihkujen vieressä. Tällä alueella on myös tuollainen reitti, jota pitkin pääsee kävelemään ja ihmettelemään erilaisia ja erivärisiä kuumia altaita. / And then it was the Lower Geyser Basin. There is a nice boardwalk here too, and you can go round the area and see a lot of different types of geysers, fumaroles and springs. Funny how first there is just green and then you have the thermal areas with dead trees right next to them.

Seuraavaksi suuntasimme Old Faithful -geysirille, joka on ehkä näistä geysireistä se tunnetuin, koska sieltä purkautuu tuota vettä ja vesihöyryä niin säännöllisesti. Wikipedian mukaan vesisuihku purkautuu 30-90 minuutin välein. Tämä vaihtelee ilmeisesti jonkun verran vuodenaikojen mukaan, sillä meidän tuolla ollessa tämä näytös nähtiin noin 90 minuutin välein. Itse asiassa meillä oli sellainen käsitys yhden tv-ohjelman perusteella, että tämä luonnonnäytelmä näkyisi 30 minuutin välein. Osuttiin siis suhteellisen oikeaan aikaan kuitenkin paikalle ja odotusta oli vain reilun vartin verran. Matkan varrella olisi ollut myös Midway Geyser Basin, joka me hypättiin toistaiseksi yli, koska sinne oli aivan järjetön jono jo parkkipaikalle. Mutta samanlainen jono sinne näytti olevan seuraavana päivänäkin, eli kannattaa siis vaan jonottaa. Tai mennä ajoissa. Tässä Old Faithfulin vieressä on näitä majoituspaikkoja ja muun muassa ravintola, jossa käytiin siis myös syömässä. Vähän on erilaiset annokset kuin täällä Kaliforniassa. Kalkkunasandwichin nimellä ollut ruoka, joka koostui leivänpalasta ja neljästä siivusta oikeaa kalkkunaa (ei leikettä) ja kahdesta lisäkkeestä, kuten perunamuusista ja vihreistä pavuista muistutti ehkä enemmänkin kiitospäivän päivällistä kuin leipää. Ja hintaa oli vähän alle 10 dollaria, joten hinta-laatu-suhde oli taatusti kohdallaan. /  Next we headed to Old Faithful, that is probably the most known geyser in Yellostone. It is active and erupts every 30 to 90 minutes. I guess it depends of the time of the year and many other things. When we were there, it was pretty much every 90 minutes. Before Old Faithful and after Lower Geyser Basin, there is also the Midway Geyser Basin, that we skipped that day. There was a huge line of cars waiting for a parking spot, but that was also the case the next day, so I guess it happens pretty much daily during the summer. So be ready for that or head there as early as you can. Next to the Old Faithful they also have hotels, visitor center, gift shops and a restaurant. The food really is different than in California. With $9.95 you can buy a turkey sandwich that looks more like a Thanksgiving dinner with real turkey slices and the sides. Money well spent there.

Old Faithfulin läheltä lähtee reitti, joka kulkee vuorenrinnettä ylös. Ei se nyt mikään mahdoton kiivettävä ole, mutta kannattaa huomioida, että ollaan reilun 2 kilometrin korkeudessa, eli ihan älyttömästi ei kannata alkuun rehkiä. Luultiin siis tässä vaiheessa, että geyser purkautuu 30 min välein. Mutta kiivettyämme selvisi, että väli onkin 90 min, joten ei sitten jääty odottamaan enää tuntia, että oltaisiin nähty purkaus täältä rinteeltä käsin. Joku pienempi geysir tosin purkautui silloin, joten se ainakin nähtiin (kuva alla). / There is a nice little hike up the mountain next to the Old Faithful. It is not a very strenuous one, but you might want to keep in mind that the elevation is above 7000 feet, so plan accordingly. We had thought that the geysir erupts every 30 minutes, so check your facts before climbing. We did not want to wait an extra hour to see the Old Faithful from here, but there was a smaller one near that one that we saw from here (see below).

Kaikenlaisia värejä, luonto kyllä hämmästyttää täällä monimuotoisuudellaan. / All kinds of colors everywhere.

Old Faithfulin takana on Upper Geyser Basin, jossa taas on valmis reitti, jota kulkea ja kaikenlaista outoa ja erikoista nähtävää. / Behind the Old Faithful, in the Upper Geryser Basin, there is again a lot of weird and amazing stuff to be seen.

Ja Old Faithful Upper Geyser Basinilta katsottuna. Vähemmän ruuhkaa ja siksi ehkä jo paremmat näkymät. / From the Upper Geyser Basin you can also see the Old Faithful. Less crowd, too.

Nyt en ole ihan varma, mutta muistelisin tämän olevan West Thumb Geyser Basinista. Joka tapauksessa tässä on Yellowstone Lake -järvi, jonka pohjassa näkyy myös näitä vulkaanisia alueita. Tässä on vieressä myös kaikenlaisia erilaisia vulkaanisia lampia, mutta koska näyttävät melko samalta kuin ylläolevat, en laittanut niistä nyt tähän enempää kuvia. / This is Yellowstone Lake, and if I remember correctly this is from the West Thum Geyser Basin. You can see the thermal/volcanic areas in the lake too. There are some water areas like in the other geyser areas too, but they looked a lot like the other geyser places.

Yellowstonessa ei sääntöjen ja ohjeiden mukaisesti saisi pysähtyä keskelle tietä, ellei tiellä ole eläintä. Tien vieressä on usein levikkeitä, joille pysähtyä, muuten pitäisi vain ajella eteenpäin. Yht'äkkiä kuitenkin autojonot molempiin suuntiin hidastuivat ja pysähtyivät ja ihmiset osoittelivat metsään. Selvisihän se syykin sitten: harmaakarhu. / In Yellowstone you should just keep driving and not stop on the road. Or only stop if there is something blocking your way. Suddenly everyone slowed down and stopped and started pointing towards the woods. Yes, it is a grizzly bear. And I am glad that everyone stopped since this is the only grizzly that we saw there.

Hayden Valleyn kohdalla asustaa sitten se toinen biisonilauma. / The other bison herd lives in Hayden Valley, so be prepared to stop. They can be on the road, too.

Näillä aivan tien vieressä kinastelleilla biisoneilla taisi olla jonkunlaisia erimielisyyksiä päivällispaikasta. / These bisons were right next to the road. We surely did hope that their argument would stay there and they would not run to the road where we were in the car.

Ja vielä yksi biisonin vasikka. Näyttää melko paljon lehmältä ja hyvin lähisukulaisiahan nämä ovatkin. / And one more young bison. When they are young, they look pretty much like cows, but they are very closely related anyways.

Edellisessä postauksessa näitä kanadanhirviä jo näkyikin reippaasti. Tämä kuva taas siitä Albright Visitor Centeriltä. Tällä nuorukaisella taisi olla asiaa insinööreille. / And then we were back at Albright Visitor Center again going to our hotel in Gardiner. Like in the previous days, the elks were there again. This youngster probably wanted to have a chat with the engineering department.

Rättipoikkiväsyneenä etsimään ruokaa ja nukkumaan. Vielä oli edessä yksi päivänpuolikas puistossa ennen matkan jatkumista.

We were exhausted, and hungry, so after finding something to eat and finding the hotel it was pretty much it. Sleep before the last half a day in Yellowstone.
