Mini road trip: Grand Canyon, Arizona

Ei taas suunnitelmaa tehdessä tiedetty, että ehditäänkö Monument Valleyn itse puistoalueelle illalla vai vasta seuraavana aamuna. Varasuunnitelmana oli kipaista Grand Canyonilla, jos Monument Valleyn reissu ei venähtäisi ja jos alueella ei ole liikaa lunta. No ehdittiinhän sinne, eikä luntakaan ollut paljon ja tietkin oli sulana. Ei tosin tehty mitään vaelluksia tai pitkiä kävelyitä, mutta oli kuitenkin aikaa pydähdellä eri kohdissa, kun ikään kuin ajettiin koko alueen läpi. Ollaan käyty paikassa joskus 14 vuotta sitten, mutta oli se vaan yhtä upea edelleen. Eikä kuvat mitenkään pysty välittämään sitä kaikkea upeutta ja majestetillisuutta, vaikka kuinka yrittäisi.

We had another detour in the plan. Actually not so much of a detour, but we were not sure, if we would have time to visit Grand Canyon on this trip and if we could go there – if there would not be too much snow in the area I mean. Well we did have time. No time for any long hikes though, but to drive through the park, stop where we wanted to stop and just enjoy the scenery. We have visited the place before, but it is just awesome. It is kind of sad how the pictures really can not capture the whole essence, but anyways here we go.

Grand Canyonilla on etelä- ja pohjoispuoli, mutta pohjoispuolelle päädy on suhteellisen vaikeaa ja se on suljettu talvisin. Eteläinen South Rim on siten yleensä se mihin mennään. Puisto itäpuolella pysähdyttiin ensin näkötornilla. / South Rim, near the East entrance at the watchtower.

Tämä on muistaakseni Grandview Point reitin varrella. / If I remember correctly this is at Grandview Point or somewhere near that.

Grand Canyon Village, jossa on vierailijainfot ym. on varmaan se kaikkein suosituin paikka ja pysäköintipaikan löytäminen voi kesällä olla haasteellista. Mutta ehdottomasti kannattaa pysähtyä myös jossain ei niin turistien kansoittamassa paikassa, jos alueelle suuntaa. Tässä paikallinen korppi pysäköintialuetta tarkastelemassa. / The Grand Canyon Village is probably the most popular place to visit, and the most crowded. I guess that it is hard to find parking spot on the peak seasons, since there was already a lot of people in February. This raven looked like he was guarding the parking lot from his favorite tree.

Nyt täytyy sanoa, että en tiedä, että ovatko nämä mustahäntäpeuroja (ei näkynyt kauheasti häntiä kuvissa) vai kanadanhirviä. Osaisiko joku muu tunnistaa? Siinä ne kuitenkin ruokailivat tien vieressä tyyväisenä vähän kauempana tuolta ihmisruuhkasta. / I am not sure if these are mule deers or elks (both found on this area). Could someone identify these? Anyway these were eating next to the road when we drove away from the Visitor Center.

Toisessa kohdassa on lunta vielä kasoissa, toisessa kohtaa kaktukset valloittavat. / Some places had snow, other had cactuses. (I know, it can be really hot here in the summer.)

Kun ajelee tien toiseen päähän ei turisteista ole enää oikeastaan jälkeäkään. / Near Pima Point, at the other end of the park and there was hardly any other tourists. The scenery is as good as other places though.
