Mini road trip: Flagstaff, Tonto National Forest & Phoenix, Arizona

Grand Canyonista suunnattiin Flagstaffiin, jossa yövyimme ja kävimme pikaisesti siinä vanhassakaupungissa. Viehettävä vanha kaupunki, mutta melkoisen pieni kaupunkihan tämä on täällä vuorilla. Seuraavana aamuna suuntasimme sitten kohti Phoenixia, josta kone lähti illalla. Päätimme taas ottaa kiertotien. Tai varsinaisesti ei kauheasti kierrä, ehkä noin 40 mailia tulee matkaan lisää, joten oikea nimi lienee sitten maisemareitti. Flagstaffista Phoenixiin menee siis suora tie, valtatie 17. En tiedä minkälainen tuo tie on, mutta erilaisten matkailusivustojen mukaan se on tavallinen moottoritie, joten tie 87, joka kulkee mm. Tonto National Forestin läpi tarjoaa taatusti enemmän katseltavaa ja ihmeteltävää. Vain sen tien nähneenä, suosittelen lämpimästi.

From Grand Canyon we drove to Flagstaff, AZ. We had time to visit the small old town before going to dinner and getting some much deserved sleep. Next morning we headed to Phoenix. After browsing some travel sites, we decided to take the scenic route (road 87) that adds some 40 miles to the route instead of the highway. I have never driven the highway, but the road 87 is wonderful, I highly recommend driving that if even in the area. Beautiful scenery and not just boring old highway with a lot of trucks.

Flagstaffin vanha kaupunki / Flagstaff old town

Reitti kulki Flagstaffilta (korkeus 2,1 km) lumisilta vuorilta alaspäin ja maisemat vaihtuivat nopeasti kaktusmetsiksi. Siinä sitä sitten aamun pikkupakkaset Flagstaffissa muuttuivat hellelukemiin. Phoenixissa oli sitten jo 30C puoliltapäivin. / The road from Flagstaff (elevation 7000 feet) goes quickly from snowy lake areas to cactus forests between the mountains. Pretty cool. From 30 F in Flagstaff to 90 F in Phoenix in less than 4 hours!

Pysähdyspaikka matkan varrella, todennäköisesti Paysonissa. Voiko paljon amerikkalaisemmalta näyttää? / Pitstop, probably at Payson, AZ. I do not remember for sure.

Jossain vaiheessa reissua tuli puheeksi, että missäköhän päin niitä mustangeja ja muita villihevosia mahtaa Amerikassa vielä asustaa. No, mustangeja ei taida Arizonasta löytyä, mutta melko lähellä Phoenixia Tonto National Forest -metsäalueella on 70-luvulta lähtien elänyt villihevosia. Tai paikalliset kutsuvat näitä villihevoksiksi ja viranomaiset karanneiksi tai 'unclaimed', sillä kukaan ei oikein tiedä, että kenen nämä ovat alunperin olleet, eivätkä ole siis täysin alkuperäisiä tälle alueelle. Näitä on kuulemma yritetty siirtääkin, mutta paikallisten vastustuksesta saavat edelleen vaellella täällä metsässä. / We did travel 1660 miles so that is a lot of time to spend in a car and talk about stuff. At some point I started to wonder where you can still find mustangs or wild horses in the US. Unfortunately you do not have mustangs here in AZ, but I did find that they have wild horses in the Tonto National Forest area, just outside of Phoenix. The locals call these wild horses the authorities call them 'unclaimed horses'. What I read about these is that the horses have lived in this ared from the 70s. No one knows who they belonged to, but now no one owns them. The are not originally native to this area, but they are wild (or unclaimed if you want to put it that way) and living here in the forest. How cool is that? After I read about these it was sure instantly that we had to go and find the horses. And it was not very difficult to do so, these were right next to the road actually. 

Alueella olisi ollut vaikka kuinka monta hienoa virkistysaluetta, mutta kaikissa vaadittiin pysäköimiseen pysäköintipassi, eikä missään näytetty niitä myytävän. Eli jos oikeasti haluaa alueella viettää aikaa, kannattaa selvittää, mistä sellaisen pysäköintipassin saa ostettua. Ilmeisesti jostain kioskeista tai vastaavista Phoenixissa. / There would have been several nice spots to have a picnic, but all of these required a parking permit. We did not see any place where to buy one. So maybe these are intended only for locals that know where to buy a parking pass. If you are planning on staying in the area, you should probably try to find out first where to buy the pass.

Ja koska nyt college-haku on teinillä edessä lähitulevaisuudessa, pistäydyttiin myös ASU:n (Arizona State University) kampuksella. Hienon näköinen paikka, ihan kuin oma kaupunkinsa Phoenixin kupeessa, mutta törkeän kuumahan täällä oli. Helmikuussa +30C. / Since we were in the area we decided to check the ASU campus area. I have seen the college representative talk about this university, but we wanted to see the area ourselves too. Nice looking campus, but hot. Seriously. 90F in February. How hot is it in May? Or summer?

Ilmeisesti kävely ja pyöräily on liian kuumia tapoja siirtyä paikasta toiseen, jokaisen kampusalueen talon edessä oli skeittilautaparkki. / Apparently this is the way how to move between places in the campus area. At least there was a lot of these skate racks in the area.

Ja siihen päättyikin sitten tämä road trip. 1660 mailia eli 2670 kilometriä. Olihan sitä siinä autossa istumista, mutta oli se sen arvoista.

And that was it. The mini road trip, 1660 miles, 3 states in 5 days was almost done. Only flight from Phoenix to SFO left. All I can say is: this is one amazing and beautiful country.
