Vähän alkoi jo tuon jälkeen tutisuttaa, että mahtaako meille löytyä asuntoa ollenkaan, eli läpäisemmekö minkään vuokranantajan kriteereitä. Soitimme jo puolison vanhankin asuntokompleksin vuokraustoimistoon, että pääsisikö sinne katsomaan asuntoa (siellä kun oli yksi vapaa kahden makuuhuoneen asunto). Olisi päässytkin, mutta saimme sitä ennen soiton managerilta, joka oli alustavasti varannut meille asunnon, että asunto on nyt tyhjä ja sitä pääsee katsomaan (tämä oli myös asunto, jota olimme jo Suomessa katselleet netistä, että voisi olla meille sopiva kämppä). Ei kun ottamaan sitten ensimmäinen vapaa aika, milloin asuntoa pääsi katsomaan. Asunto on 2 makuuhuoneen asunto, jossa olohuone/keittiön lattia laminaattia tms., makuuhuoneissa karkea, helpostipestävä kokolattiamatto, keittiön liesikin on eurooppalaistyyppinen, asunnossa on pesukone-kuivuri-torni ja mahdollisuus vuokrata autotalli, jota saa käyttää varastona. Lisäksi taloyhtiössä on pieni uima-allas ja se on haluamamme koulupiirin alueella. Kylpyhuoneita/wc:tä on tosin vain yksi yhdistetty. Kuntosaliakaan ei taloyhtiöstä löydy, koska on suht pieni yhtiö, mutta lenkkeilemään ja pyöräilemään pääsee heti tuosta taloyhtiön ulkopuolelta. Asia oli sillä selvä. Ilmoitimme, että haluaisimme edetä asunnon vuokrauksessa.
Meille oli annettu jo edellisellä käynnillä parisivuinen lomake, joka meidän aikuisten piti täyttää. Lomakkeessa kysyttiin yhteystietoja ja ties mitä muita. Lomakkeen täyttämisellä etukäteen saimme kuitenkin jotain alennusta ensimmäisen kuukauden vuokrasta. Nämä lomakkeet tuli antaa managerille sekä selvitys tuloista ja maksaa 800 $ panttimaksu (jonka saa takaisin, jos asuntoon ei tarvitse tehdä korjauksia sen luovuttaessamme). Asia ei kuitenkaan ollut ihan sillä selvä, sillä managerin piti vielä tarkistaa taustamme, eli lähinnä luottotaustamme sekä esim. mahdolliset häätötuomiot. Kovasti kyllä hänelle yritimme selittää, että olemme vasta muuttaneet, joten mitään tietoja ei välttämättä löytyisi. Puolisko kyllä on asunut täällä aiemmin, mutta siitä on yli 5 vuotta, joten luottotiedot lienevät vanhenneet (ainakin netin mukaan näin olisi). Jos kaikki olisi ok, saisimme avaimet asuntoon viimeistään perjantai-iltana, kunhan seinät olisi ensin maalattu ja kokolattiamatot pesty ja kaikki kuivuneet.
Ensimmäinen soitto managerilta tuli seuraavana päivänä. Olisi tarvinnut minun sosiaaliturvatunnukseni taustaselvitystä varten, mutta en ole saanut sitä vielä. Ei kuulemma ongelma. Toisena päivänä tuli soitto, että vuokratakuuta / panttimaksua ei oltu voitu veloittaa visaltani, koska järjestelmä ei hyväksy ulkomaista luottokorttia. Ei kuulemma taaskaan mitään ongelmaa, mutta sekä 1. kk vuokra että panttimaksu pitäisi maksaa rahamääräyksellä (money order) tai shekillä (cashier's check, henkilökohtainen shekki ei käy). Siinä oli omat kommervenkkinsä saada rahaa tilille nopeammin, sillä vaikka puolison pankkitili oli saatu jo avattua, siirto Suomesta kestää 3-6 päivää. Loppujen lopuksi eräs puoliskon entinen suomalainen työkaveri lainasi meille tarvittavat rahat pariksi päiväksi. Olivat keskustelleet kahvitunnilla ja tuo entinen työkaveri oli ihan itse ehdottanut tätä järjestelyä, eikä ollut huolinut kieltävää vastausta. Täällä kuulemma on tapana auttaa muita suomalaisia, jos vaan toinen tarvitsee apua ja sitä pystyy antamaan ja piste. Seuraavan päivän soitto vuokrayhtiön managerilta oli onneksi jo vähän positiivisemman sisältöinen. Taustatsekkaus on mennyt läpi ja saisimme avaimet asuntoon pe-aamuna, jolloin myös itse vuokrasopimus allekirjoitettaisiin ja sen jälkeen voisimme muuttaa samantien. Ja taas tuli opetus, että älä luota internetiin. Eli puolison vanhat luottotiedot ovat ilmeisesti edelleen voimassa, sillä täällä luottoyhtiö ei saa antaa tarkkoja luottotietoja tietenkään niitä kyseleville, vaan antavat luokituksen 1-10. Puoliskon luokitus oli siellä suht yläpäässä, joten mitään estettä asunnon vuokraamiselle meille ei ollut. En uskalla edes ajatella, mitä olisi tapahtunut, jos puolisko ei täällä joskus olisi ollut aiemmin, varsinkin kun ei ole vielä paikallista työpaikkaakaan. Ilmeisesti olisi pitänyt saada joku luottotiedot omaava allekirjoittamaan myös sopimus. Nytkin vuokrasopimus voitiin tehdä vain puoliskon nimellä, koska minun taustojani ei paikallisen sosiaaliturvatunnuksen puuttuessa pystytty tarkistamaan.
Loppu hyvin, kaikki hyvin. Tätä kirjoittaessa on tässä asunnossa asuttu 4 päivää ja vaikka kalusteita ei sänkyä ja patjaa ja suomalaisilta tutuilta lainattua keittiön pöytää ja tuolia sekä muutamaa valaisinta enempää olekaan, niin alkaa tämä jo pikkuhiljaa kodilta vaikuttaa.
We started apartment hunting as soon as we possibly could. We had already searched Craigslist and some rental apartment web-sites for possibilities back in Finland. We had listed a looong list of requirements for the apartment and were looking a place that should have most of the requirements. But we knew we would not get them all in a same place. We had listed location, 2 bedrooms, price, hardwood floors, good condition, swimming pool, enough place for our furniture, storage and an on-site gym in our list of requirements. We tried to contact one rental agency, but never could do that. So we did not see the two aparments that they had in their list. We did go see them from outside and thought that they would probably not be what we had been looking for anyway. We went to see two apartments already on the first weekend (we arrived here on Thursday). The other had hardwood floor in the whole apartment, but otherwise it was not exactly what we were looking for. Then we went to see the manager of the other apartment complex. The 2 bedroom apartment was not yet vacant, but she was kind enough to show us her own 1 bedroom place where she was currently moving in. Her boss was already there and they promised to reserve the 2 bedroom place for us and we could see it on Monday. We went to see two other places too, just to see what was out there. The other one had only floor-to-floor carpeting and no hardwood (for allergy reasons we were rather considering something else). The another was a nice little European-style house, but it was not available anymore and the house next to that would be available only after 60 days. The (Swedish) landlord was quite direct and said that he would not probably rent that for us, since we had just arrived and did not have a credit record, job here and we were not getting an executive / director level salary. He was also asking for 1 month rent and deposit of the amount of 2 months rent.
After this information we were already a bit worried could we actually get a rental apartment at all or should we have to stay in a hotel for a long time. We also called to a rental complex where my husband lived while he was here last time. We thought that there were at least a change that they had some info about my husband there even though it was a in another area. We never went there since the manager of the place we had been before called us and said that we could come to see the place they had reserved for us. The apartment is a 2 bedroom apartment, with laminate / vinyl in the living room and kitchen area and a recycled easy-to-clean carpet in the bedrooms, with steel appliances in the kitchen and an European style stove and a washer/dryer in the apartment. There is also a carage that you can use as a storage too. And there is a small swimming pool in the common area. And it is near the schools. No on-site gym though, since this is quite small complex. But you can start running or biking just outside the apartment building. So we were sold and informed the manager that we would like to proceed in the renting process.
We had already filled the two page information sheets and were asked about our income. The manager said that we should pay the deposit and then they would check our background information (the credit history and whether there has been some problems with us before like getting evicted or something). We told her that they would probably find nothing since we had just arrived and my husband's credit history was probably expired (they say in the Internet that it expires in 5 years.). If everything would be okay, we would get the apartment on Friday, when it was painted and professionally cleaned and the carpet would be steam-cleaned.
The first call from the manager came the next day. She wanted to know my social security number, that I did not yet have. It is coming in a couple of weeks. That would not be a problem. The next day she called again. Their system did not get the deposit from my visa account since I did not have an US Visa. That would not be a problem, but we shoul pay the deposit and the first month's rent with either a cashier's check or money order. My husband already had a bank account, but the money transfer from Finland would take 3-6 days and there would be no chance to get it by Friday. Luckily a ex-coworker of him offered to lend him the money. He was not asked about to do that, just asking him about advice. He told my husband that we Finns stick together here and help when help is needed. The next day we got a call from the apartment manager - again - this time with good news. The background check was okay and we could get the keys to the aparment and sign the lease on Friday morning. So again, do not trust the Internet. My husband's credit history is not expired and he had gotten a good grading in the 1-10 scale and could be taken as a tenant here. Since they could not check me, the lease is only in my husband's name, but that is not a problem.
All's well that ends well. Now writing this we have lived here for 4 days. Even though we do not have our stuff here yet we do have a place to sleep and our Finnish friends here loaned us their extra kitchen table and chairs. We also bought some floor lambs so we have almost everything that one would need at the moment. I am already starting to call this place a home.
