Lapsi kouluun -projekti, osa 1 / Enrolling my son to school, part 1

Koska kouluun ilmoittautumiseen tarvitaan osoite, jotta tietää, minkä koulupiirin kouluun sitä pitäisi ilmoittautua, suuntasimme koulutoimistolle heti, kun olimme löytäneet asunnon. Eivät suostuneet ottamaan papereitamme, koska itse vuokrasopimusta ei oltu vielä allekirjoitettu, mutta onneksi opastivat, että mitä muuta pitää tehdä ennen kouluun pääsyä. Eli pitää tarkistaa, onko kaikki rokotukset voimassa ja tehdä tuberkuloosi-testi (TB), ilman ko. testiä ei kouluun ole mitään asiaa. No, rokotukset olivat pääsääntöisesti kunnossa. Lisäksi vaadittiin rokote / tieto vesirokosta. Lapsukainen on sairastanut 3-vuotiaana vesirokon, mutta ei olla silloin käyty lääkärissä, joten mitään todistusta siitä ei ollut. Vaihtoehtona oli siis joko käydä otattamassa verikoe (Varicella, vasta-ainetesti) tai ottaa rokotukset (2 rokotetta 3:n kuukauden välein). Koska meillä ei ole vielä omaa lääkäriä, eikä paikallista sairausvakuutusta, sillä kuvittelimme pärjäävämme hyvin 3 kk:n matkavakuutuksella Suomesta, saimme koulutoimistosta paikallisen klinikan (community health center) yhteystiedot. Sinne pitäisi suunnistaa ensin TB-testiin ja verikokeeseen ja tulla koulutoimistolle seuraavan viikon maanantaina takaisin vuokrasopimuksen ja testitulosten kanssa. No, kyseisellä klinikalla tehdään TB-testejä vain joka keskiviikko. Menimme ke-aamuna sinne vain kuullaksemme, ettei kyseisellä viikolla testiä voi ottaa, koska tulos pitää lukea kahden päivän päästä ja pe oli paikallinen vapaapäivä (pääsiäinen). Lisäksi verikoetta ei voida ottaa ilman lääkärinmääräystä ja uusia potilaita klinikka ei ota vastaan ennen toukokuuta. Justiinsa.

No, marssimme sitten seuraavana maanantaina koulutoimistolle vuokrasopimuksen, rekistöintilomakkeen ja muiden lomakkaiden kanssa. Näistä yhteen piti vakuuttaa monikohtaiseen lomakkeeseen, että emme asu myös muualla ja tarvittaessa joku voi tulla tarkistamaan, että oikeasti asumme täällä. Menimme toimistolle tiedustellaksemme, että kauanko lapsi voi olla niin, ettei ole koulussa, sillä emme saa tarvittavia testejä vielä viikkoihin (maahanmuuttajan ohjeessa käsketään ilmoittaa lapsi kouluun mahdollisimman pian). Onneksi koulutoimiston virkailija totesi heti, ettei niin kauan odotella ja antoi meille toisen klinikan osoitteen, jossa kuulemma asiat ovat hoituneet paremmin.

Ensimmäinen askel kohti kouluun pääsyä oli siis otettu.

In order to be able to enroll you child in to a school you have to have an address. So, right after we were finished with the apartment hunting process we went to the school disctrict office. We could not enroll my child and leave the papers right away, since we did not have the rental agreement yet. Luckily they told us what else should we do. The immunization records should be okay and you should have the TB-test (tuberculosis) done. My son had all the vaccinations but not the varicella (chickenbox) since that was not given in Finland automatically and he had already had the dicease. Since he was three when he had chickenbox and we did not see a doctor because of that we did not have any proof of the chickenbox. So we should get a blood test done in order to look for the varicella antibodies or something (or take 2 shots of vaccine). We do not have the health insurance yet, because our Finnish travel insurance covers for the three months. But it covers only emergencies. So the nice lady at the school district office gave us an address to a local community health clinic that takes the TB-test every week on Wednesday. After the blood test and the TB-test we should come back to the school disctrict office with our lease agreement on Monday. So we went to the clinic on Wednesday only to hear that the TB-test could  not be done since Friday was a local holiday (proably because of Easter) and the TB-test result could not be read. And we could not have the blood test taken without an order from a doctor. The only thing is that they do not take new patients before May. Right.

So we went to the school district office on Monday anyway with the lease agreement, the enrollment papers and other papers. One of the papers had a list of things and I should assure there for example that we do live in this place and not in another place simulataneously and someone could come and check whether we live here, if there ever was any doubt about the matter.

We wanted to ask the office how long could we wait with the enrolling process. The book for the new immigrant says that you should enroll your child to school as soon as possible. Luckily the lady in the office said that we would not wait until May anyway. She gave us an address to a Indian Health Center in San Jose. She said that she had heard only good things about that particulate clinic.

So we had done step one now.
