Olimme myös saaneet koulutoimistolta puhelinnumeron, johon piti soittaa varatakseen aika lapsen englanninkielen testiin, jotta tietävät pitääkö sijoittaa lapsi ELD-ohjelmaan (English Language Development) ELL-opiskelijaksi (English Language Learner) vai pääseekö normiluokalle. Tuo testi tehdään kaikille maahanmuuttaja-koululaisille, joiden äidinkieli on muu kuin englanti. Testi saatiin sovittua myös seuraavalle päivälle eli tiistaille kouluun, johon lapsi sijoitettaisiin.
Keskiviikkoaamuna menimme siis rekisteröitymään klinikalle, eli lapsesta otettin perustiedot ja meidän tulot tarkistettiin, jotta voitiin määritellä meille sopiva maksu. Maksu näillä klinikoilla määritetään prosentuaalisesti, eli esim. 95 dollarin lääkärinpalkkiosta maksetaan prosenttimääräinen maksu. Tuo on voimassa seuraavat 6 kk, eli jos lapsi nyt sairastuu tällä välillä, voimme vaan varata suoraan ajan tälle klinikalle. Tämän jälkeen meidät tultiin hakemaan lääkärinaikaa varten (klinikalla oli remontti, joten sairaanhoitaja tms. aina vei toiseen rakennukseen, missä odoteltiin). Ensin tapasimme terveydenhoitajat (2 kappaletta, joista toinen oli ilmeisesti harjoittelija), jotka punnitsivat ja mittasivat lapsen ja ottivat verenpaineen ja kirjasivat allergia- ym. lääkkeet koneelle. Tämän jälkeen tuli lastenlääkäri ja määräsi verikokeen. Hän myös totesi, että lapselta puuttuu yksi rokotus, joka vaaditaan kouluun. Hinkuyskä + tetanus jne. rokotteista lapsi on saanut 7-vuotiaana Dtap-rokotteen, mutta nyt on uusi Tdap-rokote, joka on kuulemma eri rokote. Ja koska Pohjois-Kaliforniassa on ollut hinkuyskä-tapauksia useampia, suositteli ottamaan myös ihan terveyssyistä tämän. Sovimme, että rokote annetaan seuraavana päivänä TB-testin luennan jälkeen, sillä edessä oli samana päivänä sen enkun testi. Tämä sopi lääkärille ja marssimme laboratorioon, jossa lyhyen odottelun jälkeen verikoe otettiin.
Englannin testi oli poikasen mielestä vaikea ja koostui tehtävistä eri alueilta, eli kuuntelun ja luetun ymmärtämistä, kirjoittamista ja puhumista. Siellä saimme tietää, että kyseinen ELL-luokka ei olisikaan tuossa koulussa, vaan meitä lähimmässä olevassa koulussa (hyvä uutinen, sillä tuonne lähinpään pääsee kävellen / pyörällä). Testin tehnyt opettaja kertoi lähettävänsä testitulokset koulutoimistoon vähän yli puolen tunnin jälkeen, eli eikun sitten sinne takaisin. Koulutoimistosta hieman ihmettelivät, sillä tulokset annetaan yleensä odottelun jälkeen koululta käteen, mutta onneksi faksi oli tullut perille ja tuloksena on, että lapsi menee ELL-opetukseen (joka ei sinänsä ollut mikään yllätys). Kerroin, että vesirokko verikokeen tulosten saamiseen menee 2-3 päivää, eli eivät välttämättä ehdi tälle viikolle. Koulutoimiston virkailija totesi, että emme odottele niitä enää. Eli kunhan TB-testin tulos on selvä, tulemme takaisin ja hän tekee koulusijoituksen. Sitä ennen kuitenkin meidän pitäisi saamamme rekisteröintikoodin avulla rekisteröidä lapsi uudelleen netin kautta. Tuohon prosessiin menikin sitten kotona reilu tunti, rekisteröinnin lisäksi sinne piti täyttää kaikki sairaudet ja lääkitykset ja laittaa 2 yhteyshenkilöä (meidän perheen lisäksi) tältä alueelta ja yksi muulta alueelta (esim. jos maanjäristys sattuisi posauttamaan koko piilaakson toimintakunnottomaksi ja tämän alueen yhteyshenkilöitä ei saataisi kiinni..). Eikun soittelemaan suomalaisille tutuille, että saako heidän nimensä antaa yhteyshenkilöiksi. Onneksi antoivat luvan.
Keskiviikkona iltapäivällä ajelimme sitten TB-testin luentaa varten. Arpi vai mikä-lie ei ollut muuttunut mihinkään, joten tulos oli negatiivinen, eikä röntgeniä tarvittu. Samalla annettiin se puuttuva rokotus. Klinikan toiminta oli kyllä nopeaa, mutta myös palvelu oli äärimmäisen hyvää. Välillä tuli sellainen olo, että olemme aivan väärässä paikassa, muut asiakkaat oli yleisesti paikallisia vakuutuksettomia henkilöitä. Mutta ovat kuulemma kuukausi sitten hoitaneet jonkun toisenkin suomalaisen kouluun vaadittavia testejä ja rokotuksiakin, samaten joidenkin norjalaistenkin. Joten huono omatunto oli turhaa.
Iso askel kohti kouluunpääsyä oli vihdoin otettu.
Right after we left the school district office we drove to San Jose (about 20 miles) to the health clinic. And the process started to speed up. The TB-test can be taken daily but the blood test can be ordered only by a doctor. We just have to get registered to the clinic before we can see a doctor. We managed to the registration time and the doctor's appointment both for the next morning. Ang the TB-test could be taken right away. They put some kind of liquid under the skin to the arm. It is first a small bubble under the skin and later it brakes and leaves a small, red mark. The mark should not get too big or it might be possible that you have a TB and then you have to go to the chest X-ray. Some people get the bigger mark because they have been vaccinated against the TB. They told us that some schools require that the test has to be taken every year.
The school disctrict gave us also info about an English test. Every child that comes to US and speaks some other language than English at home should get the test. With the test they will deside whether the child will be enrolled to the ELD program (English Language Development) as an ELL student (English Language Learner). So we booked a test for Tuesday to the school that my son was going to go.
On Wednesday morning we went to register to the clinic. They also checked our income (or my husband's Finnish income) in order to define our payment. The payment is a part of the whole payment, 0-100%, for example from the doctor's fee. This is valid for the next 6 months. So if my son gets sick we can go to this clinic. The agreement is valid for the next 6 months. Then we went to meet to the pediatrician. Or first we met two nurses that took my son's measurements and his blood pressure and the medication information. Then we got to meet the pediatrician and she ordered the blood test. She also said that my son was missing one vaccination. He had the Dtap for tetanus and whooping cough etc. but he did not have the Tdap that is a different vaccine. There has been outbreaks of the whooping cough at northern California so she said it would be vital to take the vaccine as well. We asked whether this could be taken tomorrow (since we were coming back for the TB-test anyway) because my son was having his English test later that day. That was okay and we headed for the laboratorium where they took the blood test er quickly.
So then it was time to head for the English test. My son said afterwards that the test was really difficult. Well, that is understandable since he has had English for 4 years at school and still has a lot to learn. They test had parts for reading, listening, writing and discussion. After the test we found out that my son was not going to that school. The ELL classes would be in the school that is closest to us (yippee!). We were told to go back to the school district office in 30 minutes to get the results. The result was that my son will be attending the ELL classes. That was not a surprise for us. I told that the blood test would take 2 to 3 days, but the TB-test results we would get the next day. She said that we would not wait for a long time and asked us to come back on Thurday with the TB-result. I got same papers and I should make the online registration at home. That took me about an hour, I had to list all the info again and give all the medication information an list emergency contacts both in the area and further away. The one should be away from the Silicon Valley are, probably because of the earthquakes, if that would destroy so large a area that us and the emergency contacts could not be reachable. So I had to call our friends here whether I could list them. Luckily they agreed.
On Wednesday we drove to the health center again. The TB-test was negative and it was done. They also gave the vaccine shot. The service at the health clinic was fast but also really good. They told us that they have done the school routine to some other Finnish and also Norwegian ones in the past. And so we were again one step closer to my son getting to school the next week.
