Kiitospäivä Denverissä / Thanksgiving in Denver area (with bisons!)

Kyllä, Kiitospäivää vietetään marraskuun lopussa, mutta en ole saanut aikaiseksi perata näitäkään kuvia aiemmin. Alunperin meidän piti viettää kiitospäivää kotona, mutta varattiin vähän ex tempore reissu muutamaa päivää aiemmin. Sunnuntaina sääennusteita katsoessa luvattiin Denveriin pientä plus-keliä, joten suunnitelmissa oli, että hiihtämään päästään. No, ennustuksiin ei aina ole luottaminen, ja varasuunnitelmia kannattaa aina olla. Keli Denverissä olikin lumisateinen ja pakkastakin oli yhtenä päivänä -10 C. Koska lunta tuli ihan vaakasuoraan, eikä vuokra-auton "all season tires" olleet kyllä mitkään suomalaiset talvirenkaat, piti hiihtosuunnitelmat perua. Onneksi saimme loppuajaksi sentään vaihdettua vuokra-auton SUV-malliseen, että sillä uskalsi ajella edes kaupungista ulos. 

Lätkäliput oli ostettu etukäteen, koripallo-otteluun menimme ex tempore (hattuhyllyn paikat maksoivat noin 20 taalaa, kun täällä meidän kulmilla saisi maksaa moninkertaisesti), joten onpahan nyt käyty sitten katsomassa NBA-matsikin. Biisonit ja preeria olivat myös alkuperäisellä listalla, ja upeitahan nuo paikat ovat tuolla Denverin nurkilla. Kaupunkihan on tunnettu myös nimellä "mile high city", sillä tietty osa kaupungista on tarkalleen mailin korkeudella meren pinnasta. Oli lopulta ihan hyvä reissu. Kuvat puhukoon puolestaan.

Yes, Thanksgiving was already in November, but I have not had time to short these pictures before. We were not supposed to travel during Thanksgiving, but decided to go somewhere anyway. So we checked what cheaper options there was (not many!), what was close enough (we have already visited Vegas before) and where we could ski. So, Denver it was. The weather app was telling us that it would be beautiful weather with + 5 C / 40 F weather. Well, that did not happen, the truth was: snowing horizontally and 14-20 F. And the all season tires in the rental surely were not enough to drive in that weather. But, there are always back up plans, right? We had booked tickets to a hockey game, but we also decided to go watch a NBA game (the tickets were so much cheaper than the Warriors game tickets in the Bay Area). We had already planned to go see bisons, so that we did. We had fun (even though sometimes we were literally freezing). I´ll let the pics tell you all.

Lumisateinen Denverin keskusta kiitospäivänä / Snowing in Denver on Thanksgiving evening (mobile phone pics, the quality is unfortunately not top notch for the evening pics)

Lumisateen tauotessa käytiin Denverin viereisillä vuorenrinteillä kääntymässä. Tulipas kotoinen olo. / When the snowing stopped we wanted to look for some nice snowy places.

Ja biisoneita / ... and bisons.

Yhtenä päivänä suunnattiin preerialle, eli Buffalo Herd Nature Preserve -alueelle, josko täällä näkisi paremmin niitä biisoneita / The Buffalo Herd Nature Preserve is not a large area, but it sure was beautiful

Alueella on amerikanhiirihaukkoja, mutta en ole varma, että onko tämä oksalla kököttänyt nyt sellainen / There are red-tail hawks in the area, but does anyone now if this actually red-tail hawk or something else?

Ja nämä biisonit tuntuivat syövän koko ajan, joten kuvissa on pääsääntöisesti selkää ja takapuolta.. / And the bisons seemed to be eating all the time, so I could mostly capture their back or back side..

Biisoni / Bison

Tälle tielle oli ajaminen kielletty, mutta olisi sinne päässyt. Ei siis mitään aitaa tässä auton ja biisonien välissä. / This is a road that is not permitted for tourists, but there is no fence between us and the bisons.

Kun aurinko alkoi paistaa, oli tämä -10 C:een pakkasmaisema aivan uskomattoman upea. / And when the sun was shining, you could hardly remember that the temperature was 14 F. It was just amazingly beautiful.

Meitä vähän varoiteltiin, että Denverissä ei ole oikeastaan mitään näkemistä, mutta ei ollenkaan hullumpi reissu. Ruokakin oli oikein hyvää, käytiin syömässä mm. kiitospäivän ateria ja parina iltana muissa ravintoloissa. Puoliso otti aina kuin mahdollista biisonipihvin ja oli kuulemma oikein maukasta. Ted´s Montana Grill -ravintolaa voidaan kyllä suositella lämpimästi.

So there was plenty to see and experience in Denver, even though the weather could have been better. We also enjoyed several good meals and a thanksgiving dinner. We can really recommend the Ted´s Montana Grill. Hubby really liked their bison burger by the way.
