Labor day on täällä yleinen vapaapäivä syyskuun alussa (joo, vähän taas kesti näiden kuvien kanssa..). Koska mulla oli yksi ilmainen yö hotellivarauspalvelussa, kansallispuistokorttikin oli vielä voimassa ja tiedettiin, että syksystä tulee kiireinen (ei kyllä tiedetty, että kuinka kiireinen), niin päätettiin tehdä vielä pieni pitkän viikonlopun reissu. Tarkoituksena oli suunnata ensin pikaisesti McArthur-Burney Falls -putouksille Pohjois-Kaliforniassa, ja mentiinkin, mutta ei päästy itse puistoon, sillä kaikki parkkipaikat oli täynnä ja puistovahti sulki pääsyn puistoon. Eli jatkettiin sitten matkaa seuraavaan kohteeseen eli Lava Beds National Monumentille, siitä sitten yöpymään Kalamath Fallsiin Oregoniin. Seuraavana päivänä sitten suunnattiin Crater Lake -kansallispuistoon Oregonissa ja yövyttiin White Cityssä Oregonissa. Lähempää puistoakin toki normaalisti voisi majoittua, mutta varattiin reissu vähän viime tippaan, niin nyt yövyttiin näissä, vaikka ihan hyvin se näinkin meni. Paluumatkalle vähän arvottiin reittiä, mutta todettiin, että ei me tänne kuitenkaan niiden putousten takia ihan heti ajeta takaisin, niin tehdään nyt vielä ylimääräinen koukkaus ja yritetään sinne uudestaan. Sitten Lassen Volcanic Parkin kautta ajettiin takaisin kotiin (tästä paikasta olenkin joskus jo kirjoittanut aiemmin, joten nyt ei kuvia sieltä). Reissu oli tällainen pienen budjetin reissu, mutta puolisko sai ylinnopeussakot siinä Lava Beds -puistosta pois ajamisen jälkeen, niin kulut tuplaatuivat, mutta kerrankos sitä.
We did a pretty much ex tempore plan to drive North on Labor Day weeken (I know, it was 3 months ago, but I haven't had time to sort the pictures before). We had to slightly adjust the plan, since when we tried to go to the McArthur-Burney Falls on Satuday, the park was full, no parking spots and the park ranger closed it. That was a bummer, but we decided to make a detour when coming back home again and visit it then. So we did our Lava Beds NM, Crater Lake and McArthur-Burney Falls trip with driving back home via Lassen Volcanic NP (no pics here though). It was a really good trip, I wish we had had more time, but you plan it, you deal with it. I had a free night on a hotel booking service, and the stays in Klamath Falls and White City were not expensive anyway, we still had a valid National Parks pass, so it was paying one night, gas and food. A pretty low key trip. Except that hubby got a speeding ticket after the Lava Beds NM that pretty much doubled our long weekend budjet. Well, you live, you learn. Had to happen at some point.
Lava Beds National Monumentilla ensimmäisenä näkee tasaisen maaston ja laavakiveä, mutta sen alla on suoranainen rykelmä erilaisia luolia. Niitä ei kait kaikkia ole vielä edes löydetty. Koskaan oltiin täällä vain yksi iltapäivä, eikä allekirjoittanut ole mikään ahtaiden paikkojen ystävä, päätettiin käydä vain muutamassa helpompikulkuisemmassa luolassa. Luolat on luokiteltu kolmeen: least challenging (helpoin), moderately challenging (keskiverto) ja most challenging (haastava), joista ainakin jälkimmäisissä osassa joutuu ryömimään ihan pitkin pituuttaan. Eli mukaan siis polvisuojukset, kunnolliset lamput (mielellään ainakin päähän laitettava suunnistajanlamppu mikä-lie) ja kypärä, jos niihin haluaa suunnata. Info-pisteestä tosin saa lainaksi ison taskulampun, joka kannattaa käydä lainaamassa, jos aikoo mennä vain noihin helpompiin. Kypärä ja ylimääräiset lamput on kyllä ihan hyvä olla olemassa. Luolissa on lepakoita (harvemmin niitä kyllä siellä näkee) ja USA:ssa on jossain luolissa lepakoille vaarallista white-nose syndrome -tautia, joten luoliin pääsemiseen tarvii saada siitä infopisteestä ensin lupa. Ennen luvan saamista on listattava kaikki luolat, joissa on käynyt viimeisen viiden vuoden aikana ja vakuutettava, ettei nyt ole päällä samoja vaatteita ja kenkiä kuin niissä käydessä. Tauti leviää helposti esimerkiksi kenkien mukana ja on tosiaan lepakoille hengenvaarallinen. Kun luvan on saanut, niin sitten vaan matkaan.
At Lava Beds you first see the serene nature and lava, but there is more to this park. There are several caves (probably some still undiscovered) under the surface. And those are the ones that make this place so cool. The caves have been categorized as least challenging, moderately challenging and most challenging. As fas as I understood the most challenging are really that - challenging. You have to really crawl into those ones, so make sure you have your hard hat, good flashlights and knee pads if you plan to go to one of those. You can buy some of the stuff from the visitor center and they have big flashlights there too that you can lend. Very usable in the least challenging caves, where you do not need both hands to proceed. You also have to have a permit in order to enter the caves. You can get that from the visitor center, too. There are bats in the caves (you will probably not see them though) and there is white-nose syndrome in the US that is killing bats. So you need to list all the caves that you have visited in the past 5 years and assure that you do not have any of the same clothing or shoes on you. Please do not lie. If I understood correctly they can disinfect your shoes there, but the disease is really deadly to the bats, so you do not want to take any chances of bringing it with you to the caves.

| Sentinel Cave on kilometrin pituinen luola, jossa ei valoa ole itse luolassa yhtään (eikä täällä ole enää mitään lamppuja). Luola mutkittelee ylös ja alas ja polku on tuollaista hyvin hienojakoista pöllyävää hiekkaa. Myönnän tässä vaiheessa, että itse käännyin jossain vaiheessa takaisin, mutta muu perhe kulkivat koko kilometrin. / Sentinel cave is one of the longer caves at 3,280 ft. The caves has two entrances and the dry, sandy path goes up and down. There is no light coming to the cave, so make sure your batteries are good on your flashlights. I am not a fan of thight places, so I did turned around pretty quickly, but hubby and son did walk the whole thing. |

| Valentine cave on 498 metriä pitkä, mutta umpinainen, eli sama matka on käveltävä siis myös takaisin. Luolassa on alkuun ihan leveä suuaukko ja mahtuu hyvin kävelemään, luonnonvalo tosin loppuu melko pian. Loppupäässä luolaa joutuu jo vähän kyyristymään ja ryömimäänkin, jos sinne asti haluaa mennä. Mutta luolan pohja on melko tasainen ja helppokulkuinen. / Valentine cave is 1,635 ft long and it has pretty smooth floor, so easy to walk even though it is rock, and does not have a sandy path. The opening is pretty big, but it gets a bit tighter as you go along, and you might need to get on all fours at the end. There is no natural light in here, so flashlight is indeed needed. |

Luolan katossa olevat bakteerit ja mineraalit heijastelevat kuin olisivat kultaa, mutta eivät siis ole. / Skull cave is a 580 ft cave with a wide opening and good path. There are actually man made stairs that you can go down to touch the year-round ice floor if you want to. The minerals and bacteria make it look like the ceiling would be full of gold, but it isn't. |

Seuraavana päivänä oli sitten edessä päivä Crater Laken kansallispuistossa. Tätä oli muutama henkilö mulle ehtinyt kehua. Koska Labor Day -viikonloppu on suosittu reissausviikonloppu, kun melkein kaikilla on kolme päivää vapaata putkeen, niin oli hyvä, että lähdettiin tänne aamulla aikaisin ja päästiin näkemään suuri osa puistosta ennen isoa ruuhkaa. Loppuiltapäivästä olikin jo vähän haasteellisempaa löytää parkkipaikkaa tai jonottaa ravintolaan (luovutettiin ja suunnattiin muualle).
I had already heard from a couple of people that Crater Lake is a must place to visit in Oregon. And they were not wrong. Since it was Labor Day weekend, we knew it would be crowded and went there early in the morning. It was a bit chilly, but so serene and beautiful. And we were right, later in the afternoon it was hard to find parking spots and get into the restaurant (we went somewhere else, because the line was insane).

| Ja kyllä, järvi todellakin on uskomattoman sininen. Kuvia ole käsitelty ollenkaan ja luonnossa ehkä näyttää vieläkin sinisemmältä. Järven ympäri menee tie, joten järven voi kiertää kokonaan ja katsella järveä vähän eri kulmista ja eri korkeuksilta. En oikein osannut valita kuvista, joten tässä nyt vähän sinistä järveä. (Kuvat eivät oikeasti tee oikeutta paikalle.) / Yes, the Crater Lake really is amazingly blue. I have not edited these pics at all, and I actully think that it is bluer in real life. You can drive around the lake and spot to look at the lake on different spots, heights and angles. And hike a little if you want to. |

Maanantaina siis suunnattiin kotiin McArthur-Burney Falls -putouksille, jossa on tietty ne putoukset ja ihan kiva reilun kilometrin kävelyreitti putousten ympäri.
The next day it was McArthur-Burney Falls and then heading home. There is the falls, of course, and a nice Falls Loop Trail that is about a mile long. Totally worth doing that if you are in the area.
Hätäisesti suunnitelluksi halpisreissuksi oli kyllä tosi jees. Suosittelen.
This was probably the best cheap ex tempore trip in a while. Totally recommended.
