Road trip: Idaho, Grand Teton NP & Casper

Yellowstonen jälkeen ajettiin siis yöksi Idahoon, jossa yövyimme tasan keskellä ei mitään. Sinänsä tämä oli ihan oiva reitti, sillä näimme Grand Teton -vuoret toiselta puolelta reitillämme (kuvista tosin mikään ei oikeasti ole julkaisuun riittävän hyvälaatuinen). Yön jälkeen ajoimme sitten jälleen Wyomingiin, Grand Teton National Park -kansallispuistoon, jossa viettäisimme reilun puolipäiväisen.

From Yellowstone we drove to Idaho (because we could not find a reasonably priced lodging anywhere nearer, and since this was a road trip, a drive to Idaho was appropriate). We did see the Grand Teton mountains from the other side, really nice view. Unfortunately none of those cell phone pics are good enough to publish. After a night, in the middle of nowhere, we headed to the Grand Teton National Park.

Idaho, noin 2/3 Suomen pinta-alallaan ja reilulla 1,6 miljoonalla asukkaallaan on melkoisen harvaan asuttu osavaltio. Ja tunnettu perunoistaan. Jopa kolmasosa tämän maan perunoista tulee Idahosta. Siksipä jopa ulkoilmaelokuvateatteria mainostettiin perunalla. / Idaho is the 14th largest state in the US, but has only the population of appr. 1.65 million. So it is one of the least densely populated states (number 7 actually). But it is known for its potatoes. Nearly 1/3 of the US grown potatoes come from Idaho. Maybe that is why even the outdoor movie theater had a potato on the ad.

Yhden yön asumuksemme. Sinänsä tuota cowboy-kuvaa näkee paljon enemmän Wyomingissa, ja siihen törmää siellä suht usein. / This was our stop for one night. Us and some bikers. This was pretty much in the middle of a field, so it was super quiet and I slept like a baby.

Grand Tetonin visitor centerin edessä varoiteltiin syöttämästä kettuja. No, yhtään ei tietty nähty, vaikka kuinka yritin puskiin katsella. / Warning sign at the Visitor Center at the Grand Teton National Park. And no, of course I did not see any foxes. Damn.

Grand Teton National Park on saanut nimensä näistä vuorenhuipuista. Nimen alkuperästä on ainakin pari vaihtoehtoista versiota. Toisen mukaan nimen antoivat ranskalaiset tutkimusmatkailijat, miehet, jotka taisivat olla reissussa ilman naisseuraa. Grand teton kun tarkoittaa ranskaksi isoja rintoja. Toisen teorian mukaan, nimi on annettu alkuperäiskansan, eli Teton sioux -heimon, mukaan. / The thing in Grand Teton park is the mountain tops, the tetons. You can see this view from pretty much everywhere from the park. There are two different explanations to the name. First says that the name was given by Canadian expedition crew (probably all men), that named these grand teton, meaning "large breasts" in French. The other story says that the place was named after the Teton Sioux tribe. So, pick your story.

Tämä kansallispuisto on melko pieni, verrattuna esimerkiksi naapuriinsa Yellowstoneen. Sen läpi kulkee tie, jonka ajaa kyllä ilman pysähdyksiä varmaan jopa alle tunnissa. Jo aamulla oli melkoisen lämmin ja kuuma päivä tulossa, joten ei lähdetty haikkaamaan ja kiipeämään Inspiration Pointille, vaikka se onkin kuulemma todella kaunis paikka. Sen sijaan päätettiin lähteä veneajelulle Jenny Lake -järvelle. / Compared to Yellowstone, this park is much smaller and you can easily drive through it, probably even less than in an hour (depending on where you drive). The morning was very warm and it was going to be a very hot day, so we skipped the hiking to the Inspiration Point. I hear great things about that, so you should probably visit that. We decided to go to a boat ride on Jenny Lake instead.

Veneestä näkee vuoret todella hienosti, ja veneen kuljettajalla oli paljon erilaisia kertomuksia kerrottavaan puistosta, sen historiasta ja muusta. Puistossa käy muuten vuosittain yli 4 miljoonaa kävijää. Järjetön määrä, joten ainakin osittain kuviteltiin itse sen johtuvan siitä, että jos Yellowstonesta lähtee etelään, on periaatteessa pakko ajaa puiston läpi. / You can see the mountains very nicely from the boat. The driver/ranger also had interesting stories about the park, the history, animals etc. We learned that over 4 million people visit the park yearly. That is a crazy number. Probably most of the people are also visiting Yellowstone too, but still.

Kuuman päivän johdosta eläinbongaukset jäivät melko vähäisiksi, mutta yksi peura sentään ruokaili siinä järven rannalla. Kuumuuden takia esimerkiksi karhut etsiytyvät viileämpiin paikkoihin ja ylemmäs tuonne vuorille. Muun muassa mustakarhujahan täällä on paljon. Kuulemma aiemmin 50-60-luvuilla karhut oppivat tulemaan ihmisten luokse ruuan perässä ja turistit ottivat itsestään kuvia jopa karhun selässä istuen (!!). Tämä touhu kuitenkin sai ikäviä käänteitä, kun karhut oppivat, että ihmisellä on aina tarjottavana jotain syötävää, ja aina silloin tällöin joku karhu hyökkäsikin metsässä vaeltelevan ihmisen kimppuun vähän ikävemminkin seurauksin. Tästä syystä kaikkein ärhikimmiksi äityneitä karhuja jouduttiin siinä 70-luvulla tappamaan useitakin, jotta saatiin karhut toimimaan jälleen lajityyppisesti, eli etsimään ruokansa luonnosta ja jättämään ihmiset rauhaan. / It was a hot day, so most of the animals were hiding somewhere. There is a large black bear population here, but they go higher up to the mountains when it is hot. So we only saw this deer from the boat, and the osprey. The boat guide/ranger told us that in the 50s and 60s the bears learned to beg food from the humans and became a bit domesticated in the process. So people were taking pictures with the bear, on the bear etc. That resulted in aggressive behavior of the bears, since they learned to get the food from humans. After some attacks towards some people, they actually had to kill a bunch of the most aggressive bears and guide the bears towards a more natural behavior. That means finding their own food and leaving the humans alone. I was bummed that we did not see any black bears, but I would take that any day rather than have semi domesticated bear begging me for food.

Historiallisessa Menors Ferry -pioneerikylässä kasvoi silmänkantomattomiin salviamarunaa. Hieno tuoksu näistä lähti. / Hundreds of sagebrushes growing in the Menors Ferry Historic Disctrict.

Pioneerien kodeissa on huonekalut tehty siitä materiaalista, mitä on ollut saatavilla. / The pioneers made their furniture from what was available.

Täällä oli myös kauppa, josta sai ostaa vanhanajan karkkia ja limua. Etiketin takaosan mukaan, tämä on "Best Dang Soda in the Whole Darn Country!". / In the historic district there was also a store where you could buy old style candy and stuff. According to the label these are "Best Dang Soda in the Whole Darn Country!".

Iltapäivästä lähettiin ajamaan sitten puistosta poispäin ja kohti Casperia. Casperissa ei sinänsä ollut kauheasti nähtävää, kunhan oli pysähdys pitkällä matkalla Grand Tetonista matkalla seuraavaan kohteeseemme. Wyoming on kooltaan reilut 250 000 km², mutta asukkaita osavaltiossa on vain vajaa 600 000, joten voin sanoa, että melkoisen tyhjää oli. Niin tiellä kuin sen ympäristössäkin, eli peltoa, peltoa ja muuten vaan avaraa ja harvemmin ketään tuli tiellä vastaankaan. / It was time to head to Casper, Wyoming. There was no particular reason to go to Casper, but the drive from the other corner of Wyoming to another was a long one and it would have been a long drive to do in one day, so we decided to stay somewhere in the middle. Wyoming is a bit larger than Idaho, but only has the population of appr. 600 000. So it was pretty empty, some smaller villages, but a lot of fields, more fields, more scenery and empty roads. If you have ever watched a road trip movie, this was it. A real American experience really.

Oikein kunnon sade- ja ukkoskuurokin saatiin eteemme. Tässä se häämöttää vielä edessä. Radiossakin alettiin hyvissä ajoin varoittaa, että nyt tulee niin iso myrsky, että pysykää sisällä, joten odoteltiin jotain suomalaista kesäukkosta pahempaa, mutta ei se ollut. Näköjään joku autokin on eksynyt kuvaan. / Before Casper we experienced some rain and thunder storms. They had some warnings on the radio to stay inside, but it was not so bad really. At least not this time. This is what it looks like in the middle of Wyoming. Pretty awesome.

Täällä toki aina ajoittain tulee muistutuksia maan ajoittain hyvinkin väkivaltaisesta historiasta. Sand Creekin verilöylyssä Coloradossa tapettiin arviolta 150 intiaania, pääasiassa naisia, vanhuksia ja lapsia. Tämä Sand Creek Massacre Trail kulkee sitä reittiä, jota arapahot ja cheyennet verilöylyn jälkeen kulkivat Wyomingiin ja tälle alueelle. / Part of the road that we were driving was a part of the Sand Creek Massacre Trail. The Sand Creek massacre in Colorado happened in 1864, where appr. 150 native americans were killed, mostly women, children and elderly. This trail follows the path from the Northern Arapaho and Cheneynne tribes after the massacre to Wyoming and to this area.

Casperiin päästyämme loppuillan ohjelma oli jo vakioksi muodostunut: ruokaa, suihkuun ja nukkumaan. Yövyimme paikallisessa konferenssikeskuksessa Ramkota Hotel & Conference Centerissä, joka oli oikein mukava paikka. Vastaavanlaisesta hotellista saisi täällä meidän nurkilla maksaa varmaan tupla- tai triplahinnan yöstä, joten hinta-laatu-suhde tuntui ainakin olevan ihan kohdallaan. Seuraavan päivän reittiä tarkastellessa tehtiin tulevaan reittiin pieni muutoskin, mutta siitä sitten seuraavassa.

When arriving to Casper, it was pretty much the same as previous days: eat, shower, sleep. Casper is a big, small city, and we stayed in the Ramkota Hotel & Conference Center that had pretty much everything under one roof. And the price was very reasonable too. We did our planning to the next day in the evening and added one destination to the route. But I will write more about that later.
